QiJi (Suntec City)

I am sure most Singaporeans are not unfamiliar with QiJi.    What started out as a humble food stall in Funan Centre has become a popular chain restaurant serving authentic local cuisine.    QiJi is well-known for their Nasi Lemak, Laksa, Mee Siam and Popiah.        This is Nasi Lemak (Set 7) with chicken wing, ikan bilis, fish fillet and a fried egg. The rice is cooked in coconut milk and pandan leaf, its fragrance lingers in your mouth well after you have polished off every last grain.      This is their Popiah. There is also another version with prawns which cost a little more. Every mouthful is packed with goodness, one is never enough.   I will review the Mee Siam and Laksa next time.    Halal certified and reasonably-priced, QiJi is a good place when you are looking for a restaurant to try out some authentic local cuisine.   Please find addresses and opening hours of all 10 outlets   here .

Nuvo (November)

I finally got to try Nuvo's $15 Set Lunch for the month of November. As you can see, they did not change the whole menu. Only the not-so-popular items are taken out and replaced.       Pork Belly Katsu is simply delicious. Pork belly is deep-fried in Japanese style. Drops of melted mozzarella cheese not only makes the dish look more appetising, it enhances the taste of the pork belly katsu. Cherry tomatoes salad and aged balsamic vinegar adds a little sweetness and sourness, balancing out the oiliness of the katsu.     The classic Chicken Bolognese has been given a twist by replacing spaghetti with udon. The soft udon goes well with the slightly spicy chicken bolognese sauce.      I am totally in love with the Nutella Peanut Butter Brownie - soft, gooey and sweet. However, the base is too hard and dry, I do wish that the base can be replaced with another piece of that delicious brownie. Paired with a scoop of affogato ice-cream ...

Wadori Yakitori

Stella and I found this little gem of a restaurant when we were window shopping at Clementi Mall but we didn't have any cash on us and this shop only accepts cash, so we had no choice but to find food elsewhere.   I have been thinking about it ever since and I finally got the chance to try it out.               I ordered (from left to right) Asparagus Wrapped In Pork, Shiitake Mushroom Wrapped In Pork, Cuttlefish Ball and Scallop.   Wadori Yakitori has all my favourite yakitori (Japanese skewers). I find the sauce a little too sweet, but it is still a delicious meal I will not mind having from time to time.  Clementi Mall Address: 3155 Commonwealth Avenue West, Clementi Mall #05-28/30 (inside Ichiban Sushi) Opening Hours: Daily 11am - 9.30pm Jurong Point Shopping Centre Address: 1 Jurong West Central 2, Jurong Point Shopping Centre #B1-53 Telephone: 67921283 Opening Hours: Daily 11am - 9.30pm Nex Address: 23 Serangoon Central, Nex #B1-03...

Sushi Express (313@Somerset)

I see throngs of people queuing up outside Sushi Express (CityLink Mall) every day on my way home. I thought the hype will die down once the novelty of a new restaurant wears down, but the queue never seems to disappear. I have always considered conveyor belt sushi as junk food because quality of food inevitably goes down when it is mass produced.    I decided to try out the restaurant and understand what is so special about this food establishment that draws so many people to it every day.     Giant Scallop is, as its name suggests, gigantic. However, it does taste a little bland even with the oyster sauce provided.     Grilled Mackerel looked so good we could not resist it, we snatched up two each the moment it landed on the conveyor belt. Fresh mackerel is pink from grilling and coated with a shiny layer of oil. It is every bit as good as it looks. You have got to try this.     I have enjoyed Jellyfish ever since I was little. There is som...

Ichiban Boshi - Horrible Experience

I am fairly certain I have eaten at Ichiban Boshi at least once or twice when I was younger and I don't remember any terrifying experience so I decided to give the Suntec City outlet a try on one of the days when I felt like eating out for lunch but don't know what to eat.     Chirashi Jyu is salmon, tuna, swordfish sashimi and salmon roe on sushi rice bowl. This is definitely the worst chirashi I have ever eaten! The sashimi are not fresh at all, the meat are meshy and taste suspiciously sour.    Although the quality of food is important in determining if a restaurant of acceptable standard, I feel that service is equally important. I was made to wait for 10 minutes before I could get anyone to take my order when the restaurant is not even full. I was seated at the sushi counter and the seat to my left was empty when I sat down. A lady sat down to my left shortly after. Her order was taken 5 minutes after she sat down and there is no trace of my order after she has ...

Griddy Gourmet Waffles

I was shopping around in Westgate one day and I got hungry, so I went down to the basement where all the food are.     This caught my attention. Everything is made with waffles, that sounds exactly like my kind of food.     The menus looks cute too.     Griddy Burger is beef patty, sauteed mushroom, cheddar cheese, tomato lettuce and barbeque sauce wrapped in waffles. It tastes good but eating it can be a messy affair.      Rocher Banana is waffles topped with sliced bananas, melted hazelnut chocolate spread and graham cracker crumbs. It is alright, but this dessert would have tasted so much better if they could work on their waffles, buttermilk waffles perhaps? It would be great if they can offer a few choices of favours for the ice-cream, instead of assuming every customer loves chocolate ice-cream.   The food at Griddy Gourmet Waffles can only be considered average at best, but then you are really for the innovation and creativity of ...

21 On Rajah - Not Worth The Money

There are a few Muslim colleagues at the Clifford Centre branch. They googled for Muslim buffet and found 21 On Rajah. There is no apparent reason for this company dinner but I am happy that I get to try out a new restaurant without having to pay.      I like the ceiling decoration with black bird cages, giving the restaurant a modern and sophisticated feel.     Chocolate Fondue Counter     Desserts Counter     Sushi Counter     Seafood Counter     Bread Counter     Salad Counter     Drinks Counter     Ice-Cream Counter     U.S Angus Beef Rib-Eye With Herb Jus is not too bad, the beef is roasted till tender but the herb jus is rather bland and doesn't compliment the beef very well.     Seafood Fried Rice is very normal and not something I would expect at a Mediterranean buffet. I think paella rice would be more appropriate and interesting.       Spicy Seafood...
