De Classic Golden Spoon

De Golden Spoon Seafood is a zi char restaurant in Tiong Bahru that has been around for a long time, and judging from the packed restaurant and multiple outlets, they have certainly done well.    [Someone from De Classic Golden Spoon responded on Facebook page to say that De Classic Golden Spoon has ceased operation since 2013 and De Golden Spoon and Classic that are in operation are just knockoffs riding on the fame. The chef has moved to 57 Eng Hoon Street which is just 3-minute walk from the original outlet. I can't verify the authenticity of  this claim.]       Crispy Fried Shrimp Paste Chicken   has been one of my favorite dishes since childhood and a crowd-pleaser if done well. However, the ones served here are way too salty and the chicken are dry.      Nothing remarkable about the   Claypot Tofu with Seafood & Vegetable . Vegetables and squid in a fragrant gravy.    Granted, De Golden Spoon is a seafood restaur...

LingZhi Restaurant's Hi-Tea Buffet - Totally Not worth It

If you are a fan of the LingZhi Vegetarian, a restaurant of the Tung Lok Group that specializes in vegetarian dishes, you will know that they have recently come up with Hi-Tea Buffet (only available at the Velocity@Novena Square outlet) and the economical price has attracted many people from groups of elderlies to the curious like myself.        The buffet is said to offer a total of 27 dishes (you can read the PDF menu   here ) but I am really not impressed by the overall quality of the food. The   Steamed "Siew Mai"   was falling apart and   Pan-fried Carrot Cake   is caked in oil.   Black Seame Cream   and   Almond Cream   tastes more like sugar syrups.   The price is indeed very attractive at just $14.80++ (minimum 2 persons) but I personally don't think it's a good deal.   LingZhi Vegetarian  Address: 238 Thomson Road, Velocity @Novena Square #03-09/10  Telephone:   65382992 Opening Hours: Mon...

Haru Haru

Located at the quiet Jubilee Square in Ang Mo Kio, Haru Haru is a Japanese restaurant with an extensive menu to satisfy the cravings of everyone in the family.      The restaurant is decorated in contemporary-chic style with soft lighting.  There are counter seats where you can watch the sushi masters work their magic. You can also opt to have a private table with wood panel partitions for privacy.        This is their signature dish. You can choose either Waygu Don or Gyu Don, but the friendly staff who took my order recommended that I go for Wagyu Don because the meat is more tender, so   Wagyu Don   it is. The beef slices are lightly pan-fried and served on fragrant Japanese rice and miso soup. You can either mix in the onsen egg or use it as a dip for the beef slices, either way is delicious. The tenderness of the beef slices was definitely worth the extra money and the calories.    Many people have been ravin...

Hong Kong Sheng Kee Dessert (IMM)

Gone were the days when a dessert shop only sold desserts. Hong Kong Sheng Kee Dessert, a franchise of the famous dessert shop in Hong Kong, now offers a full dining menu that has everything from HK Wanton Noodle to dim sum.        Japanese Scallop, Bailing Mushroom and Sliced Mock Abalone Noodle   is one of the new dishes they were introducing. Wanton noodles with tasteless scallop and mock abalone.      You get to sample two of Hong Kong's famous desserts at one go with   Seasme Paste with HK Carrot Cake . The carrot cake is a little salty and the sesame paste is a little watery.     Sheng Kee Hong Kong Dessert is now no different from Xin Wang Hong Kong Cafe. Singapore really does not need yet another Hong Kong cafe chain, it needs a shop that specializes in Hong Kong dessert.    Addresses and opening hours of all 18 outlets in Singapore can be found   here .

Traditional Penang Food

The spot previously occupied by Ananas Cafe in Bukit Gombak MRT station has recently been taken over by Traditional Penang Food and the tiny restaurant is packed with people every day.       Penang Prawn Mee   contains yellow noodles and vermicelli in savory prawn broth, topped with prawns, vegetables and half boiled egg. The yellow noodles are a little soggy but the overall taste is not too bad.  Stir in the provided chilli for an extra kick.      Penang Chendol   comes in a small bowl where crushed ice is topped with coconut milk, evaporated milk, green jelly  noodles and boiled red beans. It is not as sweet and rich as I would have liked, but it will have to do.    The food is not fantastic but it's nice to have something other than run-of-mill Ananas Cafe at economical prices.   Traditional Penang Food  Address: 802 Bukit Batok West Avenue 5, Bukit Gombak MRT Station

Misato

Located at the basement of The Cathay, Misato is a contemporary chic and casual  Japanese  dining restaurant. Though it has only been open since May 2015, the exquisite presentation and emphasis on using only the freshest ingredients imported from Japan has garnered many rave reviews.          I was really there to try Misato Onyakodon  which is their bestseller but it was sold out so I ordered  Ebi   Wasabi Donburi   which looked equally as promising. Five pieces of succulent prawns is coated with batter and deep-fried till a beautiful golden color and coated with green wasabi-mayonnaise sauce, served with Japanese rice in an elegant lacquer bento box. The prawns are definitely cooked upon order but the lukewarm Japanese rice doesn't quite compliment the prawns, I would have preferred that the rice be served steaming hot. This is definitely not for the faint-hearted because they are really generous with the wasabi and you get a str...

Milk & Honey (JEM)

Singapore has finally caught on the soft-serve ice-cream and frozen yogurt craze from Taiwan and Korea. First there was   llaollao   and next came Milk & Honey.        You can either get one of the signature parfaits or you can design your own parfait with their huge selection of sauces and toppings.        Royal Honey   is one of the signature parfaits. Filled with honey jello and popcorn and drizzled with honey sauce, finally topped with ivory stick and honey financier. I like the sweetness of the frozen yogurt but it looks better than it tastes. The honey jello are tasteless and the popcorn is a little stale. Chocolate Divine seems to be a favorite among the patrons.   Apparently, they also have cakes and pastries which looks really promising but I did not see any display in the outlet.     Addresses and telephone numbers of all 6 outlets can be found   here .

So Pho (JEM) - Casual Vietnamese Restaurant in JEM

Ever since my first introduction to the Vietnamese cuisine at   NamNam Noodle Bar , Vietmamese cuisine has stolen a place in my heart. I love theit use of fresh seasonal ingredients to create dishes that are clean and nutritious.   I discovered So Pho on a recent trip to JEM.     The restaurant looks so classy and well-decorated that I was a little intimidated but the warm hospitality of the staff soon put me at ease.     Pho, a Vietnamese noodle soup, is one of the most well-known dish of the Vietnamese cuisine, served with either beef of chicken.   Pho Bo - Bo Vien   is the beef version with sliced beef and beef balls. The broth is cooked with cinnamon, star anise, ginger and various spices, making the soup not only tasty but nutritious too. If you prefer chicken, there is Pho Ga.     I have always preferred rice rolls to the fried spring rolls because I find the latter too oily. This is   Goi Cuon (Summer Rolls) - W...
