Dulu Kala - The Peranakan Home

On a recent trip to Beauty World Centre, my parents and I discovered a hidden gem, Dulu Kala - The Peranakan Home. For those of you who are not familiar with this distinctively Southeast Asian cuisine, Peranakan or Nyonya cuisine is the marriage of Chinese ingredients and Malay spices and cooking methods, resulting in dishes that are not only tangy and aromatic but spicy and herbal as well.   Dulu Kala is   a family-run   restaurant that serves home-cooked Peranakan dishes, using recipes that   have been passed down through the generations.        Bakwan Kepeting   is a clear soup with homemade meatballs and bamboo shoots. The meatballs are tender and juicy with a chewy texture. The soup is clear but flavorful. It's a simple yet satisfying dish.    I love the   flavour   of the   Beef Rendang   and the spices that   go   into making the aromatic and fiery sauce. Beef Rendang originated from Minangkabau ...

Nya Nya Cafe

A Peranakan cafe has opened up in Suntec City, taking over the place previously occupied by Cocoa Colony. This cafe is hugely popular with the office workers in the area and the cafe is jam-packed with people especially during   lunchtime. Be sure to come down early and secure a place!     Ayam Buah Keluak Rice   can be considered one of the signatures of the Peranakan cuisine. The chicken is cooked using the nuts from Pangium edule (the "Kapayang" tree), giving the dish its sour and spicy flavours. Accompanied by nonya achar, ikan bilis and roasted peanuts and a scoop of the black aromatic buah keluak paste that tastes like black fermented beancurd. The sour and spicy flavours have worked its way into the tender chicken.      Beef Rendang Rice   is a little disappointing in my opinion. The robust and flavorful rendang sauce is good, but the beef itself is really hard. Sadly, I like the condiments nonya achar (Peranakan spicy pickles ...

Guksu Restaurant: Jjajang Meon and Cheese Bak Dul Platter

Time flies, it has been more than 2 years since I last visited Guksu Noodle House in December 2014.    Guksu Restaurant has recently revamped its menu and many new items   have   been added. My colleagues have been telling me that Guksu Noodle House now serves   jajangmyeon   and it is super good. My colleagues and I are going to have lunch at Guksu Noodle House to try their   jajangmyeonand Cheese Buk Dal which I saw on Suntec City's "Flavors to Savor" food guide.           This is the   Jjajang Meon   (which is more commonly spelt as "jajangmyeon") that my colleagues have been raving about. It is a popular Korean dish that has been featured in many Korean dramas and Running Man and everyone eats it as if it is the most amazing food in the world. It is essentially the Korean version of the classic Chinese noodle dish Zha Jiang Mian. In the Korean version, the thick black bean sauce is made with   chunjang  ...

Penang Place Restaurant (Suntec City)

After the Penang Street outlet at Funan DigitaLife Mall moved to god-knows-where when the mall closed for renovations, my colleagues and I missed their tasty Penang dishes.  When this new Penang restaurant opened in Suntec City Mall, we decided to check it out so we made a book, and here we are!        Whatever Penang dish you can think of, they can make it! There are easily over 100 items in this menu and 30 items will be selected at random from this list for the restaurant's lunch and dinner buffet.      This is the counter dedicated to   Penang Hokkien Mee   and   Penang Assam Laksa . You can choose to do it yourself with clear instructions to guide you through the entire cooking process or you can get the friendly staff to cook it for you. I like the tangy taste of the laksa and the broth of the Hokkien mee is really flavorful.        The cooked foods we had were   Harluk Prawns ,   Beef Rendang , ...

Beano (Millenia Walk) - Premium Soy Beancurd Desserts at Millenia Walk

Founded in 2004 by ex-banker Alan Yoon, Beano has been serving delicious and nutritious soymilk and soy beancurd using   the only   premium certified non-genetically modified   soybeans   from Canada.    After its successful flagship store at Everton Park, Beano has opened another outlet at Millenia Walk.    When Beano first opened in Millenia Walk, it only served soy beancurd desserts, but now it has started to serve breakfast, lunch and dinner. I guess Millenia Walk's high rental makes it impossible to survive on selling just desserts.    Lotus Root & Chicken Soup   doesn't look like much but I   can taste   that it has been boiled for many hours. Even then, the chicken has managed to retain its tenderness and the staff is very generous, giving me two huge pieces of chicken that   leave   me feeling very satisfied. You can choose between white rice or brown rice (top-up $1 for brown rice).    I ha...
