Da Niu Chao Shan Hai Xian 大牛潮汕海鲜 - For Chao Shan Seafood

Da Niu Chao Shang Hai Xian 大牛潮汕海鲜 is a new restaurant on Kampung Bahru Road that specializes in Chao Shan (Teochew) cuisine.  Chao Shan is in the eastern region of Guangdong and it is where Chaozhou or Teochew cuisine originated from. It is the eastern seaboard of Guangzhou, hence seafood is a prominent ingredient in Chao Shan cuisine.  Da Niu Chao Shang Hai Xian 大牛潮汕海鲜 focuses mainly on seafood but there are meat and vegetable dishes as well.  The braised meats arrived first, probably because it is the easiest to prepare.  Da Niu Chao Shang Hai Xian 大牛潮汕海鲜 offers 4 types of braised meats - Braised Duck 卤鸭 [Small S$15, Medium S$22, Large S$30], Braised Pig’s Trotters 卤猪脚 [Small S$14, Medium S$18, Large S$22], Braised Pork 卤猪肉 [Small S$10, Medium S$15, Large S$20] or Collagen Pork Jelly 猪脚冻 [Small S$14, Medium S$18, Large S$22].  This is   Twin Combination 双拼  [Small S$16, Medium S$22, Large S$26] of Braised Duck 卤鸭 and Braised Pork 卤猪肉. There is also F...

Rise Restaurant at Marina Bay Sands Sunday Brunch Buffet

I had the pleasure of having buffet at Rise Restaurant with my ex-colleagues a few year back. The top-notch quality and wide array of choices left me with a deep impression. Standard Chartered credit card users can enjoy 1-for-1 promotion for lunch and dinner buffets. You can also get up to 30% off daily lunch /dinner buffets and earn 10% instant Reward Dollars when you dine with your free Sands Rewards membership. Located on level 1 of Marina Bay Sands Tower 1, Rise Restaurant hosts all-day international buffets. The sprawling 400-seat restaurant is decorated with lots of greenery which gives the restaurant a garden-theme feel.  Due to the current Covid-19 pandemic, all buffets in Singapore do not allow self-service. Place your order with the staff and the food will be served to your table. This is the first time I am having buffet in ala carte style, it’s really quite an experience.  Rise Restaurant features eight live stations serving Indian, Western, Malay and Asian d...

Hua Yu Wee 华友园 - Seafood and Zi Char Dishes since 1950s

Hua Yu Wee was established in the 1950s, it is the last seafood restaurant left on the stretch. It is located in a colonial bungalow on Upper East Coast Road. There are both air-conditioned and outdoor alfresco seating available. You have to pre-book for indoor air-conditioned seating at least a week in advance. If you can’t get a reservation, you will be seated in the alfresco seating at the back of the bungalow. This is Hua Yu Wee’s menu. Besides seafood, there are also meat, vegetable, soup and rice/noodle dishes. Hua Yu Wee is famous for their seafood. There are various lobster, crab, prawn, crayfish, abalone/sea cucumber and fish dishes to choose from.  You can have your crab cooked in different ways - Steamed, Ketchup with Chilli, Black Pepper, Salt and Butter Baked, Deep Fried Butter.  I personally like the simplicity of   Steamed Crab  [seasonal price] with steamed egg at the base. Steaming brings out the natural sweetness of the crab.  For y...

Hongdae Oppa - Casual Korean Restaurant in Plaza Singapura

It’s impossible to miss Hongdae Oppa, it is located right next to the escalator at basement 2 of Plaza Singapore.  Following the wisdom “long queue = good food”, I decided to brave the long queue and try out this new Korean restaurant.   Hongdae Oppa offers hot plate sizzlers, fried chicken, ramyeon, jjigae, tteokbokki, hot stone jjigae, side dishes and drinks.  What is a Korean meal without Korean fried chicken? You can get either 3 pieces [S$10.90], half chicken (6 pieces) [S$18.90] or whole chicken (10 pieces) [S$29.90].  Chi-Maek (4 pieces fried chicken + 2 hite (330ml) [S$25.90] is perfect for night out with friends.  Oppa’s Chix is available in 4 flavors - gochujang, original, spicy and soy garlic. The other flavors are too ordinary, so I ordered the gochujang flavor, (which happens to be their signature flavor). The chicken is tender and the skin is perfectly crispy. Gochujang is sweet and spicy, but it can get a little after a few pieces.  I ...

Guan Heng Cooked Food - Satay Bee Hoon in Chong Pang

You will never find a dish called satay bee hoon outside of Singapore, this is a Singapore fusion dish through and through. Satay bee hoon is fusion of Malay or Javanese cuisine with Teochew cuisine. Guan Heng Cooked Food in Chong Pang City Wet Market & Food Centre is one of the hawker stalls that sells satay bee hoon. There are two sizes, S$4 and S$5.   Satay bee hoon is an intoxicating dish of rice vermicelli, cuttlefish, fried beancurd puffs, cockles and kang kong topped with chilli-based peanut sauce. The peanut sauce is only slightly spicy and it is similar to the peanut sauce used in rojak. The distinguishing factor in satay been hoon is the peanut sauce. Guan Heng Cooked Food’s peanut sauce is thick and has just the right balance of spiciness and sweetness. Combined with the rest of the ingredients, it is so slurp-worthy I almost licked the plate. Almost.  Guan Heng Cooked Food   Address: 104 Yishun Ring Road, Chong Pang City Wet Market & Food Centre #01-14...
