Tong Heng - 85 Years Old Traditional Chinese Bakery

One day, my colleague saw me having Tai Cheong Egg Tart during lunch. We started talking about our favorite egg tarts and she insisted that Tong Hong’s egg tarts are the best.  I was intrigued, so I decided to try Tong Heng’s egg tarts for myself. Tong Heng is one of Singapore’s oldest surviving traditional Chinese bakeries. Tong Heng started operations in the 1935 which means it has been in operation for 85 years.  Even though there is now another outlet at Jurong Point, I still prefer going to its flagship store in Chinatown. It is located diagonally opposite Sri Mariamman Temple, around 10-minute walk from Chinatown MRT station.  Tong Heng sells many traditional Chinese pastries and biscuits. Here are a few of their most popular items.  While most egg tarts come in round-shape, Tong Heng’s  Egg Tart   蛋挞   [S$2] are diamond-shaped. The egg tarts are freshly-baked every morning and they are still warm if you get them first thing in the morning. ...

Sho Ryu Ramen (Funan Mall) - New Hakata Ramen Restaurant

I was in Funan Mall recently where I discovered a new ramen restaurant, Sho Ryu Ramen.  Sho Ryu Ramen specializes in hakata ramen just like   Hakata Ikkousha Ramen . Hakata ramen originated from the district Hakata in Fukuoka city of western Kyushu.   Fishermen working in the Hakata district used to eat this ramen because it was quick and cheap. The food stall owners used super-thin noodles to reduce cooking time. This is Sho Ryu Ramen’s   Signature Ramen   [S$14.90] topped with pork shabu, kakuni, cha shu, chopped black fungus, scallions and flavored egg. The pork broth is rich and creamy while the thin noodles have a nice bite.  Gyoza (Original/Crispy)   [S$4.90] are the perfect accompaniment to ramen. The skin is slightly chewy with a slight crispness on the bottom. Black Vinegar Chicken   [S$5.90] is part of the Christmas special menu. The sourness from the black vinegar dressing cuts through the oiliness of the fried chicken.  Sho Ryu Ra...

Rabbit Brand Seafood Delicacies - Shark’s Fin and Abalone Dishes

I have passed by Rabbit Brand Seafood Delicacies many times in Lucky Plaza. I thought “seafood delicacies” meant exorbitant   prices so I never ventured in. Yeow Seng (Seafood) Pte Ltd supplies the abalone, shark’s fin and sea cucumber used in the dishes at Rabbit Brand Seafood Delicacies.  The interior is very old-school with plastic tables and chairs which has a certain nostalgic charm to them.  Upon looking through the menu, I realized that the prices are really quite affordable. Coupled with positive reviews from a colleague who used to eat there often, I decided to give it a try. There are altogether 26 sets to choose from. You can literally try a different set for almost a month without repeating. Among all the sets I have tried, I find that   Set A Buddha Jump Over The Wall + Bean Sprout + Rice + Chinese Tea  [S$10.15] is one of the most value-for-money set. Buddha Jumps Over The Wall, otherwise known as Buddha’s Temptation, is a variation of shark...

Wagyu More - All-You-Can-Eat Shabu Shabu from S$16.90

Like many Singaporeans, I have a weakness for all-you-can-eat buffets and steamboats are my favorite.  I stumbled upon an Instagram post from Wagyu More and their S$23.90 All-You-Can-Eat Standard Buffet caught my attention. There is also Weekend Set Lunch from S$16.90 onwards and All-You-Can-Eat Premium Beef starts from S$36.90. I am not that particular about the meat so I chose All-You-Can-Eat Standard Buffet which comes with all-you-can-eat chicken, pork and beef.  There are 10 soup bases to choose from. The Collagen Chicken Soup comes in a cute cow-face Wagyu More design.  Due to the current Covid-19 pandemic, you have to order from this order form and the staff will deliver the food items to your table. There are some cooked foods that you can eat while your hotpot cooks. Here are a few of them: Curry Samosa, Spring Roll, Ebi Fry and Chicken Karaage.  For desserts, there are Assorted Fruits, Assorted Puddings and Assorted Cake.  One thing to note is Wagyu Mo...
