My Awesome Cafe - Retro Vintage Cafe with Delicious Food

Singapore has no shortage of interesting cafes. From dreamy   Kreams Krafthouse   to Harry Potter-themed   Platform 1094 , there is something for everyone. I recently visited another interesting cafe in Telok Ayer Street called My Awesome Cafe.  This cafe is housed in the shophouse that used to be Chung Hwa Free Clinic. You can still see the facade with the Chinese words in black on the pillars at the entrance to the cafe.  Following the retro theme of the shophouse, My Awesome Cafe is decorated in a distinctively vintage look. The white walls are left unfinished on purpose and the furniture are all thrifted from around the island. The strings of colorful paper filled with well wishes from patrons that are strung across the ceiling reminds me of the Tibetan Buddhist prayer flags. The warm glow from Japanese paper lanterns and fairy lights on the ceiling gives the cafe a cosy atmosphere.  A smorgasbord of vintage items decorates the service counter. Tingkat ...

Y Cube Mookata Buffet - All-You-Can-Eat Mookata Buffet

I recently discovered an all-you-can-eat mookata restaurant in Golden Mile Complex called Y Cube Mookata Buffet. This mookata buffet promises free-flow seafood such as   crayfish, mud crabs, tiger prawns, squid, oysters and clams, meats such as pork belly and shabu beef and vegetables too. It’s sounds like such a great deal that I rounded up a couple of my friends to try it out.  Y Cube Mookata Buffet - Interior The restaurant looks bright and clean with wood-patterned floor and red-brick-pattern pillars.  White fluorescent lights and light bulbs strung across the ceiling keeps the restaurant brightly-lit.  Y Cube Mookata Buffet - Ingredients  This is the order chit or order form. As you can see, there are many seafood, meats, vegetables and other steamboat must-haves.  I was pleasantly surprised by the freshness of the ingredients, especially the seafoods. Even though this is a eat-all-you-can buffet, this restaurant did not scrimp on the quality of...

Love Food Club - Casual Halal Eatery in Perak Road

A friend recently introduced me to a halal eatery in Perak Road called Love Food Club. The paint-splashed white walls and wooden tables gives the restaurant a clean look. The ground floor can only accommodate around 20 people, there are more seats on the second floor. Lively pop music livens up the atmosphere in the restaurant.  The menu consists of bites, western delights, asian delights, pizzas, beverages and a section dedicated to bubble teas. You can view the full menu on their   website .  Everyone enjoyed the   Truffle Fries   [S$8.90]. The truffle oil was very aromatic and the heap of shredded pecorino cheese makes the fries feel luxurious.  Tahu Bagedil   [S$8.90] is a snack that originated from Indonesia, which is known as   perkedel . It is made by stuffing bagedil or begedil (seasoned potato patty) in tofu and deep-frying it till crispy. Love Food Club’s version uses a combination of chicken and beef in its filling. It is crispy ...

Standing Sushi Bar Salmon Madness - $3 Salmon Sashimi

A friend recently told me that Standing Sushi Bar has Salmon Madness on Mondays and Thursdays where 5 pieces of salmon sashimi is only S$3.  I love salmon sashimi but it is usually quite expensive in Singapore. The last place I saw salmon sashimi on the menu was at   MIZ Japanese Restaurant   where a plate of 5 pieces costs S$8.50.  Reservation is strongly recommended, if you don’t want to queue for hours. The reservation slots fill up very quickly, I only managed to get a reservation 6 weeks later.  This is the Salmon Sashimi [S$3/5 pieces]. Each plate contains 5 slices, we ordered 6 plates in one shot so they combined all into a plate. Look at how thick the slices are! I love that Standing Sushi Bar doesn’t scrimp on the quality even though it is on promotion.  Besides salmon sashimi, some of the alcoholic drinks are on promotion too.   Sake   (cold) is S$2, beer/house-pour wine/hot sake/umeshu are S$5 per glass.  I love the sweet ...

Ah Seng (Hai Nam) Coffee - Coffee Stall with 50 Years History

Mr Wong Lock Seng’s father started Ah Seng (Hai Nam) Coffee in Lau Pa Sat in 1964. Mr Wong Lock Seng took over the stall in 1997 and relocated the stall to Amoy Street Food Centre where it has been operating for the past 24  years. He currently runs the stall with his wife and son, who will be taking over the stall in the future.  Years of dedication has earned Mr Wong the praises of many satisfied customers. accolades and newspaper clippings adorn the stall, a testament to the stall’s popularity. It was even featured in   Michelin Guide Singapore 2018 .  This is what most customers order, Kopi C or   Coffee C   [S$1.10]. Mr Wong uses Carnation milk (unsweetened condensed milk) instead of the usual sweetened condensed milk. The caffeinated drink is served in retro brown rimed tea cup and saucer that have been used for more than three decades.  Even as a non-coffee drinker, I can appreciate the fragrant aroma of the Robusta coffee beans which are...
