Golden Banana - Sinfully Delicious Fried Fritters in Golden Mile Complex

I was making my way to   Y Cube Mookata Buffet   when I noticed a long queue at the entrance of Thai Supermarket in Golden Mile Complex. I didn’t have the time to queue then but I made a special trip to find out what so many people were queuing for. It turned out to be a fried fritters stall called Golden Banana.  Golden Banana offers 4 types of fried snacks: Banana [6 pieces for S$3], Potato Ball [12 pieces for S$3], Yam [6 pieces for S$3] and Sweet Potato [6 pieces for S$3].  There was only Potato Ball and Banana on the day I visited. If you want to try a little of everything, you can get a bag of mixed fritters for S$4.  Golden Banana - Potato Ball Just look at those perfectly golden brown exterior, they make my mouth water. You can taste a hint of saltiness in the batter which balances out the sweetness. It looks as if it’s hollow inside because the batter has puffed up from frying. The sweet potato core inside is chewy while the exterior is crunchy, ...

Lao Beijing - Revamped Menu with Premium Ingredients

When I was young, my mother used to bring me to Lao Beijing for their hi-tea dim sum buffet. I loved the har gow, siew mai, char siew bao … I stopped going to Lao Beijing after they stopped the hi-tea dim sum buffet.  Lao Beijing has recently revamped its   menu .  The revamped menu features many premium ingredients. Even though the prices has also become considerably higher, I still tried out a few items from the new menu. I loved the presentation of   Braised Garoupa with Pickled Cabbage and Chilli 红斑酸菜鱼 [S$38.80] which comes in a fish-shaped bowl. The portion size is huge, this can easily be shared between 2-3 people.  The thick slices are garoupa are succulent and juicy, the pickled cabbage and chilli gives this dish a nice sour and spicy kick.  Braised Sea Cucumber and Pork Tendon with Onion   纸包葱烧海参蹄筋   [S$38.80] is the ultimate collagen-boosting dish. Both sea cucumber and pork tendon are excellent sources of collagen without extra f...

Tai-Croissant - Taiyaki and Croissant Fusion Pastry Snack

I have been craving for some taiyaki, the fish-shaped Japanese snack. When I passed by Tai-Croissant at the basement of Clementi Mall, I couldn’t resist getting some. Tai-Croissant originated in Taiwan in 2015 and it came to Singapore in 2018.  Tai-Croissant specializes in taiyaki with croissant skin. There are 13 sweet and savory flavors to choose from, wrapped in more than 80 layers of crispy croissant pastry. I tried   Hokkaido Custard ,   Okinawa Mochi ,   Matcha Red Bean   and   Chicken Ham & Cheese . My favorite is the Okinawa Mochi where the mochi gives the taiyaki a special chewiness.  I like the fusion of taiyaki with croissant because croissant’s flaky buttery pastry gives this classic Japanese snack a crunchy texture. The sugar coating on the outside gives the croissant pastry an extra crispness while maintaining tenderness of the fillings within.  Tai-Croissant also sells drinks to compliment your taiyaki-croissant. There is...

Fried Rice SG - The Wok-Hey-Lookalike in Royal Square @ Novena

Following the rising popularity of   Wok Hey , I wasn’t surprised that someone would try to replicate their success. The Wok-Hey-lookalike is aptly-named Fried Rice SG because it specializes in fried rice.  Menu  Fried Rice’s menu consists of Standard Series, Crafted Series and Side Dishes. Standard Series features plain fried rice with different toppings while Crafted Series has different flavors of fried rice. Standard Series  There are altogether 4 choices in the Standard Series. This is the basic   Egg Fried Rice   葱花蛋炒饭  [S$5] without any topping. I find the quality comparable with Wok Hey’s and the portion size is pretty generous too.  There is also Pork Chop Fried Rice [S$7.90], Chicken Cutlet Fried Rice [S$7.90] and Sautéed Prawn Fried Rice [S$6.90].  Crafted Series  This is where things gets interesting and different from Wok Hey. There are 10 different combinations of fried rice bases and toppings to choose from.  T...
