Tamjai Samgor Mixian - Create Your Own Mixian

I was in Chinatown Point a few days ago with colleagues and we went looking a place for dinner when we saw Tamjai Samgor Mixian. The first Tamjai Samgor Mixian opened in 2008 in in Hong Kong. The combination of 3 fragrances, 3 spices, 7 taste, 8 flavors  and 9 freshness has captured the heart of many in the 12 years. Tamjai Samgor Mixian - The Food As the name suggests, Tamjai Samgor Mixian specializes in mixian which is a type of rice noodles from Yunan Province, China. You can create your own mixian by choosing the ingredients, soup base and spiciness. The   Herb Chicken Mid-Wings   新疆百草鸡翼   [Small S$4.80, Large S$5.80] did more to reduce my appetite than whet it. Sprinkled with a herb blend that I can’t quite figure out, the chicken wings are bland and tasteless. Avoid at all cost. Tomato soup base with your choice of vegetables and meats is the safest best for non-spicy eaters. The tomato soup is sweet, tangy and appetizing as promised. This is the infamous Hell ...

Yakiniku Like (Clementi Mall) - A5 Miyazaki Wagyu from $15.80 Nett

Yakiniku Like’s A5 Miyazaki Wagyu poster caught my attention when I was shopping in Clementi Mall one day. Miyazaki Beef is a name only given to cows raised in Miyazaki which meet strict quality standards. The meat from these cows is further graded on a scale from C1 up to A5 which is the highest rank (from   Visit Miyazaki ). Imagine having A5 Miyazaki Wagyu without having to travel all the way to Japan! I’m in! Yakiniku Like does not accept reservations, only walk-in and they are always full during lunch hour. The waiting time can be up to an hour especially for big groups. While , Yakiniku Like also have individual counters perfect for solo diners like me. Each individual counter comes with its own small grill, so you can cook your meats exactly the way you want. Yakiniku Like - The Food You can either order from the ala carte menu or order from the set menu if you can’t make up your mind. All sets come with rice, soup and choice of kimchi or soup. I am only interested in...

Jim Thompson Thai Restaurant Singapore

Jim Thompson was an American businessman who helped revitalize Thai silk industry in the 1950s and 1960s. I have visited the Jim Thompson House Museum in Bangkok, dining at Jim Thompson Thai Restaurant Singapore felt like revisiting an old friend. A courtyard with matching black-colored tables and chairs fronts the entrance. Inside, high ceiling and huge ceiling fans keeps the restaurant cool without the need for air-conditioning. Pictures and ornaments scattered around the restaurant reminds me of the art pieces I saw at the Jim Thompson House Museum. This is Jim Thompson’s   ala carte menu   but for simplicity’s sake, we went with the Thai Set Lunch at $42 per person. Thai Soup Since I can’t take spicy food, I opted for   Tom Kha Gai   (coconut galangal chicken soup). The rich coconut milk adds creaminess to the fragrant chicken soup. Thai Appetizer Honestly, I can’t really taste the difference between   Gai Satay   (Thai-styled marinated chicken) an...

Ding Tele Shanghai Panfried Dumpling 鼎特乐上海生煎包

I was at the stretch of eateries opposite Beauty World during dinner time and every restaurant was bursting with people so I ended up having dinner at Ding Tele Shanghai Panfried Dumpling. Ding Te Le Shanghai Panfried Dumpling specialises in Shanghainese cuisine and is especially known for their shengjian bao. The Food Wheat Gluten & Shiitake Mushrooms 四喜烤麸   [S$6.20] is a classic Shanghainese cold dish. The roasted gluten is tossed with citron daylily, black fungus and fried peanuts. It is a fragrant and swim sweet dish that works great as an appetiser. Sweet & Sour Spare Ribs 糖醋小排   [S$9.30] is supposed to be sweet and sour but I could only taste the sweetness. It's nice but it get a little too cloying after a few pieces. Shengjian bao is a type of small pan-fried Chinese bun that is a specialty of Shanghai. Ding Tele's   Signature Pan-Fried Crispy Pork Soup Buns 招牌生煎   (4 pieces) [S$6.20] is filled with pork filling and soup that burst into your mouth. It i...
