Black Society 黑社会 - High Class Chinese Cuisine

Don’t be intimidated by the restaurant’s name Black Society or its black-theme decor. Despite its name and appearance, Black Society is actually a high-class Chinese restaurant. The white-and-black decor and green ceiling foliage makes this a great place for business meals, family gatherings or dates. The Food We got a few dim sum from the   Dim Sum Collection   which is available daily from 11am - 4.45pm. Chilli Crab Xiao Long Bao 辣椒蟹小笼包   [S$8 for 3 pieces] looks like mini flattened bao with orange skin. It’s a little spicy but tastes great nevertheless. The   Har Gau (Prawn Dumpling) 三色鲜虾饺   [S$7 for 3 pieces] comes in 3 colors - white, red and  black. The skin is kind of falling off, but the filling inside comes with 2 full prawn. It’s amazing how the mango and prawn taste so in sync in   Crispy Mango Prawn Salad Roll 脆皮香芒沙律虾卷 [S$7.50]. Volcano Crispy Eggplant 火山脆茄子   [S$16] looks a little different from the picture in the menu. Instead...

Hong Kong Street Restaurant Novena

Even though it is located in Novena, Hong Kong Street Restaurant Novena remains very much a family-style restaurant. You will see multi-generation families enjoying a meal together on weekend dinnertime. There are more than 100 dishes to choose from. There is a large selection of soup, meat, seafood, vegetable and rice/noodles dishes. The Food Prawn & Minced Meat Rolls   虾枣   [Small S$14, Medium S$20, Large S$25] reminds me of the Prawn Rolls I had at   Keng Eng Kee. The sweetness of the prawns and minced pork works really well together while the frying gives it a crispy finish. You can never go wrong with   Prawn Paste Chicken 虾酱鸡   [Small S$15, Medium S$21, Large S$25]. The chicken winglets are well-marinated in prawn paste while the skin is fried till crispy golden-brown. Just the fish head used in   Steamed Song Fish Head in   Black Bean Sauce 鼓汁蒸松鱼头   [$25] is already so big, I can just imagine how huge the fish must be. The fish h...

No Horse Run - Locally Inspired Gelato Cafe with Average Food

There is a new shop at basement 2 of Westgate and it has the weirdest name ever - No Horse Run. No Horse Run is a direct translation of the Hokkien term “bo beh zao” which means “incomparable and in a league on its own”. The original No Horse Run store in Yishun only offers gelato but this new store in Westgate offers food options as well. The Food NHR Signature Big Breakfast   [S$12.90] is a great option for brunch. It's not the most healthy breakfast with hashbrown balls but the two thick pieces of toast smeared with butter are so sinfully-delicious. There is nothing wrong but nothing special about the   Chicken Cutlet   [S$8.80]. Taste is average, but the fries are quite crispy. Buttermilk Waffle   [S$5.50] comes with one scoop of ice-cream and a sauce of your choice. There are 12 ice-cream flavors to choose from and I chose Yogurt Speculoos based on the staff's recommendation. The yogurt ice-cream had a slight sourish aftertaste which is perfect. No Horse Run (We...

Whisk & Paddle - Cafe in Bukit Gombak Park Perfect for Brunch

I always lament that there are no good cafes around Bukit Gombak until Burpple introduced me to Whisk & Paddle. Decor This glasshouse cafe is located at the entrance of Bukit Gombak Park and it’s just a 10-minute walk from Bukit Gombak MRT station. The cafe is surrounded on all side by greenery. The inside feels idyllic and  artsy with woven threads hanging on the wall. Dangling potted plants above the counter drives home the cafe-in-garden theme. The Food Fresh Clams in White Wine Sauce   [S$19.60] is the perfect starter. The clams are fresh and there are no sand inside. The alcohol has already evaporated during cooking, leaving behind a so Irish sauce that goes exceptionally well with the toasted bread slices. Whisk Breakfast Pan   [S$24.80] is Whisk & Paddle’s version of the American breakfast. You get 2 eggs (poached/overeasy/scrambled/sunny side-up), smoked pork sausage, think cut bacon, sautéed mushrooms, corn on the cob, green salad and artisan bread...
