Kotuwa - Sri Lankan Restaurant Moves to New Bahru

I have never had Sri Lankan cuisine in Singapore, Kotuwa will be my first taste of Sri Lankan cuisine outside of its home country. Even though I have been to Sri Lanka, I don’t remember of what I ate there except there’s lots of curries. Kotuwa moved from its original location at Wanderlust Hotel to the newly-renovated New Bahru, taking over the old school (pun intended) building of Nan Chiau High School. What to order This is Kotuwa’s   menu , for your reference. Crab Cutlet   [S$16] is Sri Lankan style croquettes, filled with spiced crab brandade. You can taste a hint of the sweetness crab meat in the filling. Poricha Erachi   [S$26] reminds of the Chinese dish Sweet and Sour Pork, but using beef cheek instead of pork. The beef cheek were deep-fried before stir-fried with sauce, giving the beef cheek a slightly crunchy texture. It has a deep aroma from the aged vinegar which eliminates the greasiness. I thought   Crab Curry   [market price] will come in the fo...

A Kitchen 友间厨坊 - Northeastern Chinese Cuisine in Novena

Among the Chinese restaurants specialising in Northeastern Chinese cuisine, A Kitchen 友间厨坊 seems to be doing the best with 3 outlets and a fourth outlet opening in Punggol soon. I visited the outlet in   Vision Exchange, Jurong East  2 years back and I am going to try out the outlet at Novena. The Novena outlet is located on the ground floor of Goldhill Centre. After crossing the overhead bridge from Novena Square, turn left and you will see the restaurant on your way to United Square. What to order No trip to a Northeastern Chinese restaurant is complete with a few   Lamb Kebab 羊肉串   [S$1/stick, minimum 5 sticks per order]. The lamb skewers are well-seasoned and tender, I wouldn’t expect anything less. Fried Pork in Scoop 锅包肉   [S$23.40] is another classic Northeastern dish. The battered pork slices are deep-fried before coating in a thick sweet and sour sauce. The meat can get a little tough when cold so do eat them while it’s hot. There are many variations of...

Sospiri - Stylish South Italian Restaurant and Bar

I have always been a huge fan of   Italian   cuisine but I have never had South Italian cuisine until a friend brought me to the newly-opened Sospiri. Located on the rooftop of IOI Central Boulevard Towers, Sospiri is a 5-minute walk from Downtown station. Take the escalator up and then the lift to the left of the escalator up to level 7. On level 7, turn left and walk all the way straight and you will arrive at Sospiri. The bar and tables outside the restaurant offers sweeping views of Marina Bay Sands in the distance. If the bar area can be described as “relaxed”, the only word to describe the interior of the restaurant will be “classy” and “sophisticated”. Gold and purple illuminated ceiling with mirror in the middle plus ceiling-to-floor glass on all sides makes the restaurant feel much more spacious than it actually is. Creamy-white tablecloth on every table coupled with orange seats gives a touch of cosmopolitan. Leave-shaped lamps and tall leaves throughout the restaura...

Seasonal Tastes: The Great Thai Seafood Dinner Buffet

I have heard so much about the Seasonal Tastes restaurant in The Westin hotel. They regularly hold themed buffets and this time it’s called The Great Thai Seafood Dinner Buffet. It’s been a long while since I have last had a good   buffet, I was really looking forward to having a Thai seafood feast. Since we were at a seafood buffet, the first stop is definitely going to be Seafood on Ice. You can get your fill of scallops, black mussels, Canadian lobster claws and prawns, all cooked and kept on ice to keep fresh. There are also freshly-shucked Canadian and French oysters, perfect with some Tabasco sauce and a squeeze of lemon. Besides the mandatory salmon and tuna sashimi, there is also cured salmon belly which has a rich flavor. There is a small display of assorted sushi, but nothing interesting. Right besides the Seafood on Ice is a giant metal plate that serves Chef Pop’s Signature Lobster Pad Thai. The pad thai itself is nothing to rave about but the addition of Canadia...
