Chuen Chuen Cafe 白沙浮津津 (Tan Quee Lan Street)

Chuen Chuen Cafe is apparently quite famous for its chicken rice. I have walked past this restaurant many times and I have never had the chance to actually try the food. I was in the Bugis area with my parents, we decided to have lunch here.           Personally, I don't feel there is anything special about their chicken rice. The rice is a little dry, chicken is tender but there is no "wow' factor.      Cereal Tofu is just about the worst I have had so far. The tofu is definitely overcooked and it is too salty. The cereal is basically tasteless, you have to chew for a long time before the fragrance of cereal is released.. The tofu and cereal don't come together as it should, it remains tofu and cereal.   It's a good-enough place to have a quick meal, but don't be expecting quality food. At least the price is reasonable.   Chuen Chuen Cafe Address: 21 Tan Quee Lan Street #01-01 Telephone: 62386010 Opening Hours: Monday - Friday 6.30am - ...

Menzo Butao (Marina Square)

Menzo Nutao is founded by Yasuhiko Kurata who is a well-known ramen producer in Japan with 23 outlets in Japan, China, Korea, Vietnam, US, Thailand and Taiwan.     Menzo Butao has just two kinds of ramen: a  Hakata Ramen, which is available in three distinctive soups: Butao (White - original), Kuroo (Black - thick) and Akao (Red - spicy) and Hokkaido Ramen, namely Gyokai Ramen. The soup stock is flown in to ensure the authenticity and  consistency of flavour.            Menzo Butao is one of the first restaurants to adopt the iPad ordering system. You simply key in your order in the encased iPad on your table and your order will be sent directly to the kitchen where they will start preparing your order right away. The number of staff can be reduced and the food arrives quicker at the customer's table. It's a win-win solution.       Hakkata Ramen (they call it Cha Shu Ramen) originates from Hakata district of Fukuoka i...

Joyden Canton Kitchen (HillV2) - Fresh Cantonese Dim Sum

HillV2 is a new shopping mall that has just been completed last year. Nestled in Hillview Avenue which is in the Bukit Batok area, its secluded location gives the shopping mall an "atas" feel, catering mostly to families living in the prime locale of Upper Bukit Timah. It features an up-scale supermarket Hillview Market Place, various lifestyle shops and 21 restaurants.   Joyden is located in a corner on the second level of the shopping mall. Its slightly secluded location does not stop foodies from flocking to this highly-raved restaurant.   When I think of Cantonese food, the first thing that comes to mind is dim sum and that is what we will be having today.              Lean Pork and Century Egg Congee 皮蛋廋肉粥 is a very classic Cantonese dish. Like all Cantonese congee, the rice is boiled until the grains have almost melted into a delicious mesh, but what makes this congee stand out is the perfect consistency. Add in pieces of pork, century ...

Hifumi (Marina Square)

Individually-packed wet towels and chopsticks to ensure hygiene.          The free-flow side dishes is probably the biggest draw of this restaurant. Some of the more notable side dishes are Sweet Potato with Honey Lemon, Chawanmushi and Chicken & Vegetable Ankake. Don't even bother trying the the rest such as Zaru Udon with Spicy Sauce which tastes just a little better than plain water or Cheese Fondue with Vegetables which is very watery.        Kimchi Oyster Hotpot is an excellent fusion of Japanese cuisine and Korean cuisine. The oysters are fresh and the kimchi gives a statisfying kick.      Teriyaki Salmon Donabe is a simple dish but the pan-fried salmon fillet in teriyaki sauce is made all the more satisfying with fragrant Japanese rice.         Doesn't the Beef Sukiyaki Hotpot look drool-worthy? The beef slices are so fresh they are practically pink in color. Remember t...

Rocky Masters (Bugis)

I have passed by this cafe numerous times, but I have always thought it is a up-scale cafe because the exterior looks very posh. When I finally mustered up the courage to walk through the door, I was surprised to find a menu that consists of both Western fare and local delights.        No Pork, No Lard, No Service Charge, No GST               Chamomile Tea         American Breakfast consists of chicken ham, chipolata (sausage), bacon, scrambled eggs (choice of fried or scrambled), grilled tomato, sautéed mushrooms, hash brown and toast. It is definitely not the best American breakfast I have had: sautéed mushroom taste more like boiled mushrooms, tomato is not grilled. My favourite way of enjoying scrambled egg? Spread a thick layer of butter (noted that I say butter, not margarine) and pile on the scrambled eggs. It is divine.        Banana Cake looks kind of plain but as the saying goes, "lo...
