Forty Hands - Good Coffee and Good Food

Forty Hands is the founder of the Third Wave Coffee movement and I have always wanted to visit this cafe, but never got the chance to, until today.    Founded by the people behind Harry Grover and Spa Esprit Group, Forty Hands offers speciality coffee that is brewed from fresh beans from sustainable sources.        The interior of Forty Hands is decorated to look like an old-fashioned coffee shop with tiled walls and wooden tables and stools.      Forty Hands offers a decent menu of foods, such as All Day Breakfast, Toasties, Salads, Night Dogs and Other Things. The drinks menu is decided into coffee (Black, White, Chocolate, Iced, Cold Brew, Teas) and non-coffee (Juice, Booze, Sodas, Water).      It feels wrong to go to a cafe that brought about the Third Wave Coffee and not have at least one cup of coffee, so I ordered a cup of   Cold Brew   [$7]. Even as a non-coffee drinker, I can smell the fragrance and ta...

Noodle Bar by Tokyo Latte

Hidden among the clothing shops on the second level of JCube is Noodle Bar by Tokyo Latte, a smallish restaurant that combines the innovation and quality of Japanese with the comfort of old-fashioned European cuisine.    Noodle Bar by Tokyo Latte wants to make casual dining a gastronomic experience where good food is enjoyed in the company of family and friends. The restaurant is designed with an open-air concept with wood-topped tables and chairs.      As evidenced by its name, Noodle Bar by Tokyo Latte specializes in noodles. You can choose from 4 types of noodles to pair with your dish: ramen, cha soba, udon and Nissin (出前一丁 instant noodles).      Old Fashioned Orange Crush  [$4.30] is a refreshing drink made of orange juice, calpico, ginger ale, strawberry and mint. Not too sweet with a hint of mint.      Grilled Seafood Tomato  [$9.50, add $2 for upsize] is the signature at Noodle Bar by Tokyo Latte so I thought I wil...

Duke Bakery (CityLink Mall)

Today, I would like to introduce to you a bakery that I personally like very much - Duke Bakery.    Duke Bakery combines quality European ingredients with bread-making techniques from Japan, Europe and Taiwan to create artisan bread that is not only aesthetically pleasing to the eye but healthy and delicious too.    Since the opening of its first outlet on 27 October 2013, Duke Bakery has enjoyed immense success with many outlets around Singapore.      Duke Bakery offers more than 50 different types of handcrafted pieces of bread ranging from   Japanese Scones   and   Chrysanthemum   to   Healthy Flaxseed   and   Cranberry Walnut . I especially enjoy   Chocolate Cheese   where the black bread is made with Australia butter and Vivo chocolate encasing a ring of Australian cream cheese.      Duke Bakery has recently launched a new product,   Cheese Tart . I bought a few to try with my...

Ju Hao (Tiong Bahru Plaza)

I was at Tiong Bahru Plaza with my mother the other day looking for a good restaurant to have a spot of dinner when we spotted Ju Hao. Its menu looked somewhat similar to Din Tai Fung, so we thought we will give it a try.    Ju Hao was first established in Lavender Food Square in 2010. With a skilful team of Chinese chefs specializing in la mian and xiao long bao, Ju Hao quickly gained reputation and garnered good reviews from many food blogs.      This is Ju Hao's signature   Juicy Steamed Pork Dumpling . I am really disappointed. I am quite certain that the xiao long bao has been made in advance and taking out to steam upon order, resulting in skin that is too dry at the top and breaks at the bottom. The meat filling inside is rather tasteless and the soup is probably the only thing that saves it from being a total disaster.    Beef Brisket is one of my favourite food so I decided to have a bowl of   Signature Noodle with Beef Brisket . The...

Hill Street Tai Hwa Pork Noodle - Michelin 1 Star Bak Chor Mee

Way before Hill Street Tai Hwa Pork Noodle made it into the Michelin Guide Singapore, this bak chor mee stall has already been featured in various newspapers in Singapore.      The queue is about 1 hour before Hill Street Tai Hwa Pork Noodle got into the Michelin Guide Singapore, now be prepared to wait at least 2-3 hours, especially during lunch and dinner hours and on weekends.   Hill Street Tai Hwa Pork Noodle only sells the following items: 炸扁鱼 Zha Bian Yu (Fried Flat Fish), 粿条汤 Guo Tiao Tang (Rice Noodles in Soup), 干面 Gan Mian (Dry Noodles), 紫菜汤 Zi Cai Tang (Seaweed Soup), 肉丸汤 Rou Wan Tang (Pork Balls Soup).   The famous Hill Street Tai Hwa Pork Noodle is available in 3 serving sizes: Regular ($6), Medium ($8) and Large ($10), additional ingredients are charged separately.    I got myself the Large serving of   Hill Street Tai Hwa Pork Noodle   and I honestly don't see why everyone loves this bak chor mee so much. Granted, ...

Itacho Sushi X Jika Udon

Although I have been staying in the West of Singapore for more than 20 years and I have been to JCube many times, I have never really taken the time to really explore JCube, so today I went to JCube and I realised that the second level of JCube is just like a mini Bugis Street and Fast East Shopping Mall with many small shops selling all the trendiest clothes and accessories.    I have also realised that the second floor of JCube also houses quite a few interesting restaurants, hidden among the clothing shops.    Let's check out Itacho Sushi X Jika Udon.        Salmon is my favourite among all the kinds of seafood and   Roasted Salmon with Cod Fish Caviar also happens to be one of the signature sushi at Itacho Sushi. The flamed salmon melted in my mouth while the codfish caviar added a note of luxury to it.   Itacho Sushi is having a Blue Fin Tuna promotion where all the bluefin tuna sashimi and sushi are being sold at half...

The Good Trio (JCube) - Revisit

The Good Trio is a Chinese restaurant that specializes in Hokkien Sichuan dishes with two outlets in Singapore in JCube and Thomson Plaza.    After our first visit, this restaurant has become a favourite of my mother and me for the times when we do not want to spend time queueing for Din Tai Fung at JEM but still want to have a good Chinese meal.          Braised Nanping Noodle   is a classic Hokkien noodle dish that my mother, who is a Hokkien, enjoyed immensely. Springy thin noodles are cooked with seafood, pork and vegetables in a thick and flavorful broth.   Stir-Fried Vegetables with Black Fungus and Mushroom   is a healthy dish that has green vegetables, mushrooms and black fungus. You can't go wrong with this dish.     My mother feels that The Good Trio's   Vegetable Buns   are even better than Din Tai Fung's. I can't comment on that since I have not tried Din Tai Fung's vegetable buns but The Good ...
