Ming Ji Chicken Rice - Chilled Steamed Chicken Rice

My friend has been raving to me about this chicken rice stall in Bishan and we are finally going there for dinner.  Ming Ji Chicken Rice is hugely popular among Bishan residents, evident from the snaking long queues at meal times.  Ming Ji Chicken Rice only sells   Steamed Chicken 白斩鸡   [S$14 for Half Chicken, S$27 for Whole Chicken]. Roast chicken lovers will have to take a back seat here.  Solo diners can get either   Steamed Chicken Rice 白斩鸡饭   [S$3.50],   Chicken Drumstick Rice 鸡腿饭   [S$4.50] or   Chicken Thigh Rice 鸡尾饭   [S$6]. Additional rice costs S$0.50 per plate.   Ming Ji Chicken Rice is special because the steamed chicken is dunked in ice water until it is ready to be chopped up. The chicken is served   cold . Shocking the chicken this way  creates a layer of jelly underneath the skin, keeping the meat flavorful and succulent. The cold chicken goes extremely well with the steamed rice but the chilli ...

Treasures Yi Dian Xin by Imperial Treasure (Paragon)

It has been more than 2 years since I last did an review on   Treasures Yi Dian Xin (Raffles Place) . I have been craving for dim sum recently, so I decided to try out Treasures Yi Dian Don’s outlet at the basement of Paragon Shopping Centre.  This is Treasure Yi Dian Xin’s menu, which can also be found on their   website .  Shrimp Wanton Noodle 鲜虾云吞面   [S$10.40] is a classic Cantonese noodles dish. The wantons are plump with bits of prawn and the noodles are well-cooked but the soup is rather bland.  I have developed a taste for   Century Egg & Lean Meat Congee 皮蛋瘦肉粥   [S$10.80] recently. A good bowl of Cantonese porridge is one where the grains are cooked down to a smooth and creamy texture. The creamy and pungent century egg gives the otherwise plain lean pork porridge a little richness. We tried the popular   Steamed Rice Roll with Roasted Duck 烧鸭蒸肠粉   [s$8.60] it is an interesting combination. The steamed rice roll is silky smoo...

Jeju Kitchen (Waterway Point) - Jeju Island Volcano Fried Rice

I discovered this Korean restaurant called Jeju Kitchen when my girlfriend and I were looking to have lunch at Waterway Point en route to Corney Island.  Besides volcano fried rice that Jeju is apparently famous for, Jeju Kitchen also has has ramyeon/rabap (soup rice), army stew, galbi wok, jjigae (soups), noodles and appetizers and side dishes. You can choose between kimchi or bolgogi rice for your volcano fried rice. There are 9 options to choose from, depending on your choice of meat or seafood.  If you are getting the   Pork Volcano Fried Rice   [S$12.80 with cheese/s$12.80 without cheese), DO NOT get the bolgogi fried rice. The pork is already marinated in bolgogi sauce, if you order bolgogi fried rice, it will be much too sweet.  A good plate of kimchi fried rice is a true test of the chef’s skills, Jeju Kitchen’s kimchi fried rice is a little too wet.  The pork slices on the other hand are well-marinated and tastes superb.  I had high exp...

Bakerzin’s Fruit Series Snowskin Mooncake Review

Mid-Autumn Festival 2020 has just passed on 1 October 2020, last Thursday.  I didn’t use to pay much attention to this festival over the past years. I would usually anyhow pick up a few pieces of traditional mooncake from any shop on my way home.  I am so sick and tired of the same old lotus paste and salted egg yolk combination. This year I decided to get snowskin or durian mooncakes instead.  I originally wanted to get just 1-2 pieces since we are just a small family but all mooncakes come in 4 or 8 packaging. I stumbled upon Bakerzin’s website and saw their new Fruit Series Snowskin Mooncake. They come in 8 -piece sets but the mooncakes are mini-sized, so it’s not too much.   There are 4 flavors:  Orange Chia Seed Snowskin  Honey Dew Chia Seed Snowkin  Lychee Chia Seed Snowskin  Strawberry Chia Seed Snowskin One box costs S$46 which I think is still pretty affordable. These mooncakes are so cute and dainty, I almost can’t bear to eat the...
