La Lola Churreria - Freshly-Made Churros at Clark Quay

I recently discovered a new churros place at The Central in Clark Quay, La Lola Churreria.  It is located to the right of The Central’s entrance from the MRT station. The red neon sign on top of the entrance is very eye-catching. La  Lola Churreria has both hot and chilled churros. There are 4 flavors of chilled churros to choose from - dark chocolate, white chocolate, strawberry and matcha.  If you want only hot churros , go for Clasicos [S$6.50/3pieces, S$6.90/6 pieces, S$9.90/12 pieces, S$13.50/18 pieces]. If you want a mixture of hot and chilled churros, you can choose either Assorted Mix [S$8.50/3pieces, S$9/6 pieces, S$12.90/12 pieces, S$16.50/18 pieces] or Ultimate Mix [S$9.30/3pieces, S$9.90/6 pieces, S$14/12 pieces, S$19.50/18 pieces] depending on how many flavors of chilled churros you want. Dips are sold separately at S$3, S$3.50 and S$4 depending on the size of dip. There are 5 dips to choose from - signature chocolate, dark chocolate, matcha, cream che...

Whampoa Keng Food Street Steamboat Restaurant (Queen of Wok)

I recently had dinner with my ex-colleagues at Whampoa Keng Food Street Steamboat Restaurant which is also known as Queen of Wok. Just like   Nam Hwa Chong Fish Head Steamboat Corner, Whampoa Keng Food Street Steamboat Restaurant specializes in fish head steamboat and zi char dishes.  You have a choice of red garoupa, bucket pomfret or bardan for your   Whampoa Keng Signature Fish Head Steamboat   黄埔庆鱼头炉   [S$45-120].   We chose red garoupa fish which the lady boss recommended. The restaurant still uses charcoal to cook the fish head steamboat which somehow gives the steamboat a richer taste.  The soup base is milky-white and fragrant. There are yam and vegetables such as cabbage and seaweed in the soup which gives the soup a slight sweetness. The firm fish slices are testament to the freshness of the fish. Mushrooms, Sea Cucumber & Scallops with Spinach 冬菇海参带子炒菠菜   [S$32] is a classic favorite that everyone enjoys. The thickened gravy ...

Go-Ang Pratunam Chicken Rice - Is Thai Chicken Rice Better?

Is there any difference between chicken rice in Thailand and Singapore?  That was my first question when I saw the Go-Ang Pratunam Chicken Rice at NEX. Go-Ang Pratunam Chicken Rice began as a food stall In Pratunam district of Bangkok in 1960. It became very popular in Bangkok and Bangkok Michelin Guide listed it as a Michelin Bib Gourmand in 2019. Let’s check out this famous chicken rice shop from Bangkok and see if it lives up to its reputation.  The interior of the restaurant reminds me more of a Hong Kong   cha chaan teng   with the brass dividers and pink neon words on the wall. The only tell-tale sign that this is a Thai restaurant are the brown motif tiles on the floor.  This is their   Signature Thai Hainanese Chicken Rice (Single Portion)  [S$4.80]. I honestly don’t feel that it is any different from the Hainanese chicken rice we have in Singapore. I wish the rice could be more fragrant and the chicken meat juicier.  Steamed Sea Ba...

Picanhas' - New Halal Restaurant Serves Superb Steaks

I was going to meetup with my girlfriend who is Muslim and I couldn’t think of any halal restaurants. Luckily I remembered reading about this new halal steak restaurant named Picanhas. The Picanhas restaurant is named after a cut of beef. Picanha, which is more commonly known as rump cap or Queen of Steak, is a Brazilian cut of beef. It is similar to sirloin with its own strip of fats and it is located opposite the sirloin. There are only two mains to choose from, which makes it easy for indecisive people. The sides, sauces and toppings are all sold ala carte.  Most people will probably choose to have the   Queen of Steak   [S$21].  Even though the steak is throughly-cooked, it is still extremely tender and juicy. The strip of fats that comes with the steak literally melts in your mouth.  Even though the steak is perfect by itself with binchutan butter and sea salt, you can top up S$2 for sauce. I recommend the Chimicurri sauce which is a blend of  parsley,...
