Tan Yu 探鱼 (Westgate) - Chongqing Grilled Fish

 Tan Yu - Restaurant Front

Tan Yu 探鱼 created quite a stir in Singapore when it opened its first outlet in 313@Somerset. Many Singaporeans queued for hours to get a taste of the famous Chongqing grilled fish.

Now that Tan Yu has opened 2 new outlets in Westgate and Bugis Junction, I can finally try their baked fish without queuing for hours.

Tan Yu - Restaurant Interior

I don’t know about the other 2 outlets but I really like the interior design of the Westgate outlet. The floor is carpeted with red and blue Tan Yu logo design which makes the restaurant feel very cozy. The restaurant is decorated with vintage knick-knacks such as GUNDAM figurines and cassette tape players.

Tan Yu - Menu

As the name suggests, Tan Yu is all about grilled fish. You not only get to choose the flavor of grilled fish, you also get to choose the type of fish. There are 4 types of fish to choose from:  Limbo Fish 凌波鱼, Qingjiang Fish 清江鱼, Limbo Fish Fillet 凌波鱼柳 and Sea Bass Fish 金目鲈.

Now it’s time to choose the flavor of the grill. The non-spicy option is Grilled Fish with Soy Sauce 酱香烤鱼, but my girlfriend recommended that we get Grilled Fish with Fresh Green Pepper instead. There are altogether 10 styles  to choose from, so there should be something for everyone.

Tan Yu - Grilled Fish with Fresh Green Pepper 1

Even though the Limbo Fish that we ordered was covered with a layer of green pepper and chopped green chilli, it is actually more numbing than spicy.

The last step is to choose the vegetable and/or meat add-ons which not only gives you a more balanced diet but enhances the flavour of the fish as well. If you can't decide on what to order, just get the Golden Combination [S$12.90] which includes golden mushroom, potato, lotus root and crab stick.

Tan Yu - Grilled Lamb

Tan Yu - Grilled Eggplant

We also ordered Grilled Lamb [S$6.90 for 3 pieces] and Grilled Eggplant [S$4.90]. The lamb skewers are a far cry from the juicy ones I had at Dong Bei Ren Jia 东北人家. Grilled eggplant is superb with golden minced garlic spread on top of the eggplant.

Tan Yu - Lemon & Lime Drink

Drinks-wise, I highly recommend the refreshing Lemon & Lime Drink [S$4.80]. This sweet and sour drink cuts through the oiliness of the baked fish, leaving you refreshed.

PAUL

PAUL is a renowned family French bakery and patisserie founded in 1889. Bringing with them them the fine tradition of passion for food and French traditions, PAUL gives Singaporeans a glimpse into French culture and tradition through the delicious and visually-appealing pastries and food.       PAUL's Hot Chocolate is not as creamy as I would have liked it but every last drop is made with good-quality cocoa powder.     Lemon Tart With Meringue is not exactly my favourite dessert, but it looked so pretty that I decided to give it a try anyway. However, it proved to be too sour for my palette even with the beautifully flamed meringue.    Croque Madame is croque-monsieur (grilled ham and cheese sandwich) topped with a fried egg. Emmental cheese, cream and ham is sandwich in pain de eie and toasted till a rich golden brown colour.                         Korean bingsu is a popular Korean dessert comprising of ice shavings and various ingredients such as sweetened condensed milk, fruit syrups, fresh fruits, Korean rice cake and ice-cream. Bingsu is all the craze in Singapore now and Korean bingsu cafes are popping up everywhere like wild mushrooms.                            Besides bingsu, this dessert cafe also serves usual cafe offerings such as coffee and tea. I have been told that their Signature Oven-Baked Honey Bread is very good. The flavours include Strawberry & Chocolate with Ice Cream, Banana & Chocolate with Ice Cream and Green Tea with Ice Cream.     I was told that   Mango Cheesecake Bingsu   is one of the most popular item on the menu. Oh my, it is a sight to behold! A bowl of shaved ice is topped with sweetened condensed milk and freshly-cut m...

Grandma's - Authentic Singapore Food

Grandma's has been around for quite a while now but I only got the chance to try their food recently when the third outlet opened in Suntec City.        I remember having these prawn crackers when I was little. They are so easy and good to eat, I can finish a whole package of this in one sitting.     I don't usually order Malay food, but the Nasi Bukhari looked so good in the menu, I thought I will give it a try. Fragrant yellow turmeric rice is served with golden brown chicken leg which is crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. Prawns were fresh and succulent but I don't really like the sauce the prawns are cooked in. What really amazes me about this dish is the beef rendang.          I never knew Bo Bo Cha Cha is so such a delightful dessert until I tried it here at Grandma's. The warm and thick coconut tastes so good with chunks of sweet potato and yam. This is definitely comfort food that warms the heart.   Gr...
