The Queen and Mangosteen - British Restaurant Pub in VivoCity

The Queen and Mangosteen - Restaurant Front

Guess what I found on a recent trip to VivoCity? A British restaurant-pub called The Queen and Mangosteen! I have been reminiscing the delicious food I had in London. Since I can’t travel now, finding a British restaurant in Singapore is as good as it gets.

There is a legend why this British restaurant is called The Queen and Mangosteen. Queen Victoria offered a reward of 8 pounds sterling to anyone who could deliver to her the fresh mangosteen fruit. Although it is not substantiated by any known historical document, it may be why the mangosteen is known as "Queen of Fruit".

Although The Queen and Mangosteen describes itself as "Gourmet British Pub", it serves much more than just pub grub. In fact, it offers everything from all-day breakfast to pies and desserts. You can view the full menu here.

The Queen and Mangosteen - Yorkshire Pudding with Gravy

I finally get to try the Yorkshire Pudding with Gravy [S$6] that I didn’t get to try when I was in London. It is usually a part of traditional Sunday roast   .

Yorkshire pudding is a pudding-like bun made of egg, flour with water or milk. Even though its name says “pudding”, it doesn’t contain any cream or custard fillings. You can serve it in numerous ways depending on the choice of ingredients, size of pudding and accompanying components of the dish.

In this instance, it is served as a side dish with beef gravy. It works as a simple appetizer to whet your appetite for the rest of the meal.

The Queen and Mangosteen - Scottish Haddock Fish & Chips

Since fish and chips originated in England and it is one of the iconic dishes of British cuisine, it seems only right to order it here.

I must have been thinking of the terrific fish and chips I had at Manly Fish Market when I ordered Scottish Haddock Fish & Chips [S$24].

It is definitely much better than Lemon Sole Fish and Chips at Rock and Sole Plaice. Haddock has a firmer texture than cod with a slightly sweet flavor. The homemade curry tartare sauce that accompanies the fish is quite a novelty but I still prefer plain old tartare.

The Queen and Mangosteen - Sticky Date Pudding

The Sticky Date Pudding [S$12] is just perfect. It tastes exactly like the one I had at Mother Mash in London.

Sticky date pudding is like a super-dense version of chocolate cake. It is made with pitted dates yet you can’t really taste the dates in the dessert. It is usually served with toffee sauce and a scoop of ice-cream. This is my favorite British dessert.

The Queen and Mangosteen transports you to London through their food so you don’t have to fly all the way there. You can find all the classic British dishes here and I personally feel the taste is pretty authentic. Don’t take my word for it, come down and try them yourself.

The Queen and Mangosteen also has an alfresco seating area at the waterfront with perfect view of Sentosa. Besides spirits and cocktails, there is also handcrafted beers from Archipelago, Singapore’s own commercial brewery. Happy hour daily until 8pm where you can get 1-for-1 for selected cocktails, house pours and sparkles.

PAUL

PAUL is a renowned family French bakery and patisserie founded in 1889. Bringing with them them the fine tradition of passion for food and French traditions, PAUL gives Singaporeans a glimpse into French culture and tradition through the delicious and visually-appealing pastries and food.       PAUL's Hot Chocolate is not as creamy as I would have liked it but every last drop is made with good-quality cocoa powder.     Lemon Tart With Meringue is not exactly my favourite dessert, but it looked so pretty that I decided to give it a try anyway. However, it proved to be too sour for my palette even with the beautifully flamed meringue.    Croque Madame is croque-monsieur (grilled ham and cheese sandwich) topped with a fried egg. Emmental cheese, cream and ham is sandwich in pain de eie and toasted till a rich golden brown colour.                         Korean bingsu is a popular Korean dessert comprising of ice shavings and various ingredients such as sweetened condensed milk, fruit syrups, fresh fruits, Korean rice cake and ice-cream. Bingsu is all the craze in Singapore now and Korean bingsu cafes are popping up everywhere like wild mushrooms.                            Besides bingsu, this dessert cafe also serves usual cafe offerings such as coffee and tea. I have been told that their Signature Oven-Baked Honey Bread is very good. The flavours include Strawberry & Chocolate with Ice Cream, Banana & Chocolate with Ice Cream and Green Tea with Ice Cream.     I was told that   Mango Cheesecake Bingsu   is one of the most popular item on the menu. Oh my, it is a sight to behold! A bowl of shaved ice is topped with sweetened condensed milk and freshly-cut m...

Grandma's - Authentic Singapore Food

Grandma's has been around for quite a while now but I only got the chance to try their food recently when the third outlet opened in Suntec City.        I remember having these prawn crackers when I was little. They are so easy and good to eat, I can finish a whole package of this in one sitting.     I don't usually order Malay food, but the Nasi Bukhari looked so good in the menu, I thought I will give it a try. Fragrant yellow turmeric rice is served with golden brown chicken leg which is crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. Prawns were fresh and succulent but I don't really like the sauce the prawns are cooked in. What really amazes me about this dish is the beef rendang.          I never knew Bo Bo Cha Cha is so such a delightful dessert until I tried it here at Grandma's. The warm and thick coconut tastes so good with chunks of sweet potato and yam. This is definitely comfort food that warms the heart.   Gr...
