Bukit Purmei Lor Mee - 70 Years Old Lor Mee Store Reopens in Bugis

I have long heard of Bukit Purmei Lor Mee and how many Singaporeans claim it’s the best lor mee in Singapore. I am not a die-hand fan of Bukit Purmei Lor Mee like   Miss Tam Chiak , I only went there to see if this lor mee is really worthy of the hype. Bukit Purmei Lor Mee has been around since the 1950s. It started operations in Bukit Ho Swee and later moved to Tiong Bahru and Bukit Purmei. Unfortunately, the stall owner, Uncle Teo, suffered two heart attacks and closed the stall in 2018.  Three years later, Bukit Purmei Lor Mee has reopened in Bugis, in Cheng Yan Court coffeeshop opposite Bugis+. Bukit Purmei Lor Mee is available in $3.50, $4 and $5 portions. The thick gooey sauce is made with a combination of pork ribs, egg whites and five-spice powder. You will also find sliced fish cakes, braised pork belly,  char siew and ngoh hiang balls with your choice of noodles/mee.  Generous amount of black vinegar, chilli and garlic completes the dish. I like the ...

Meng Hui Satay Bee Hoon - Satay Bee Hoon with 30 Years of History

The friend who took me to   Guan Heng Cooked Food   said that their satay bee hoon is the best in Singapore. I wanted to test his theory so I decided to try Meng Hui Satay Bee Hoon in Albert Centre Market & Food Centre.  Meng Hui Satay Bee Hoon is very popular among Singaporeans evidenced by being featured in numerous publications. It was voted one of the Yahoo!10 Best Satay Beehoon Stalls in Singapore. It was also featured in The Sunday Times and STFood Online.   After all, Meng Hui Satay Bee Hoon has been operating at Albert Centre Market & Food Centre for more than 30 years.  This is the stall’s signature   Satay Bee Hoon   [S$4/5/6]. The cuttlefish, cockles, prawns, lean pork strips, pork liver, blanched kangkong and beansprouts are fresh and well-cooked, but the peanut gravy is not as aromatic as   Guan Heng Cooked Food ’s. It doesn’t have the crunchy peanut bits in the gravy which gives the gravy different textures.  If y...

Gyu-Kaku - Wagyu Buffet from S$58.80++ Per Person

Gyu-Kaku has recently launched a new 3 Buffet Courses promotion.  The cheapest is Weekday Standard Buffet at S$58.80++ per person available Monday - Thursday excluding public holidays.  The other two buffets are Australia Wagyu Buffet at S$66.80++ per person and Japanese Wagyu Buffet at S$86.80++ per person.  If you get the Japanese Wagyu Buffet, it also includes Australia Wagyu Buffet. That means you just pay additional $20 to enjoy both Australia and Japanese wagyu! There is a time limit of 90 minutes, but if there are no waiting customers, the restaurant will enforced the time limit. The buffet offers more than 70 items to choose from. There are appetizers, grilled appetizers, seafood, rice and noodles and salads. I love that Gyu-Kaku uses charcoal which gives the meats such a beautiful smokey flavor.  If you are getting both Australia and Japanese wagyu like we did, I suggest starting with the Australia wagyu first. If  you start with Japanese wagyu, ...

AFURI 阿夫利 Ramen + Dumpling (VivoCity) - Yuzu Ramen, Anyone?

It has been a long time since I last had ramen at   Sho Rhy Ramen (Funan Mall) . I was in VivoCity recently where I chanced upon AFURI 阿夫利 Ramen + Dumpling in the corner next to   Shake Shack (VivoCity) .  AFURI 阿夫利 Ramen + Dumpling’s specializes in yuzu ramen.  This is   Kiwami Ramen   [S$23.90] where you get all the best ingredients with either yuzu shio base or yuzu shoyu base.  The ramen is served on a wooden plate with the ingredients on a separate shallow plate and the ramen of your choice topped with fried garlic. The ingredients include kakuni, chashu, sliced chicken, seaweed, flavored egg and pickled bamboo.  I chose yuzu shio base which is light on the palate with lingering yuzu fragrance. The long thin ramen noodles works really well with the light broth for a refreshing dish.  Soft Shell Crab Bun   [S$8.90] is such a novel idea, I have never had fried soft shell crab in a lotus bun before. The soft lotus bun and the cr...
