Alma by Juan Amador - One Michelin Star European Restaurant

I never quite understood what is all the fuss about Michelin 1-star, 2-stars and 3-star restaurants until I dined at Alma by Juan Amador. I was happy enough with the Michelin Bib Gourmand stalls and restaurants but Alma but Juan Amador totally changed my mind about the Michelin-starred restaurants. Helmed by Singaporean Executive Chef Haikal Johari, Alma specialises in modern-European dishes with Asian influences. Alma offers a great value 3-course, 4-course and 5-course set lunch starting from only $78++ which is great for corporate lunches or a mid-week treat. We chose the 4-course Executive set at $88++ per person. Alma - The Food The meal starts with three seasonal bite-size snacks to whet the appetite. The one in a bowl is matcha with uni (sea urchin). The matcha is not bitter which goes really well with the natural sweetness of uni. The toast on the left side is crispy brioche bread with foie gras and scallions. There is no gamey taste from the foie gras. The white cho...

Bing Bing Ice Cream Gallery - Artisanal Ice-Cream Parlour in HillV2

I have a colleague who stays at HillV2 and she was telling me about this small ice-cream shop located besides Hillview Market Place called Bing Bing Ice Cream Gallery. I was doing thrift-shopping at The Salvation Army Praisehaven Mega Family Thrift Store the other day when I remembered about this ice-cream shop and decided to check it out. It is a really small shop that is easily missed if you don't look carefully. I like the pink and white pattern on the sliding doors that reminds me of the shades on ice-cream trucks. There are about 12 seats in the small air-conditioned shop. You can select scoops of ice-cream from the ice-cream display freezer or buy ice-cream in tubs from the standing freezer. There are also ice-cream cake and sponge cakes. Ice-cream are priced S$4.40 - S$5.90 for single scoop and S$5.90 - S$8.90 for double scoop. There are 30 flavours of ice-cream to choose from and new flavours are added periodically. My colleague's favourite is Earl Grey & Fig while ...

Menbolah - Korean Chinese Snack Menbosha in Singapore

Ever since I saw Korean-Taiwanese celebrity chef Lee Yeon Bok make menbosha on Youtube, I have been wanting to try this popular Korean-Chinese snack. Since I can't fly to Korea due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the next best thing is to try to find it in Singapore. Thankfully, a shop named Menbolah has sprung up that specialises in Korean shrimp toast. Menbolah is located in CT Hub 2, a drive-through food street in between Bendemeer and Lavender MRT stations. Menbolah is one of the stalls located at the end. Menbolah - Menu Menbolah offers menbosha, menbo toasts and drinks. You can also order set meals that consist of menbo, a drink and a side. Menbolah - The Food Trio Box   [Ala Carte S$12.90, Set S$15.50] is the most popular because you get to sample three types of menbosha in one sitting. You get 3 pieces of Original Menbosha, Garlic Butter Menbosha and Mentaiko Menbosha each. It's advisable to start with Original Menbosha followed by Garlic Butter Menbosha and finally Mentaiko...

A Kitchen 友间厨坊 - Northeastern Chinese in Jurong East

I recently discovered a new restaurant in Jurong East that specialises in Northeastern Chinese cuisine. A Kitchen 友间厨坊 is located in Vision Exchange, a small commercial building about 10 minutes away from Jurong East MRT station. I visited with a girlfriend on a Thursday evening and the restaurant was buzzing with activity. Business is so good that they have taken over the shop space next door and the alfresco area outside the restaurant were filled with table after table. There are over 160 items on the menu with prices ranging from S$1 - S$38.80. Northeastern Chinese cuisine is well-known for their generous portion size. A Kitchen 友间厨坊 - The Food These small crawfish is hugely popular in China but its popularity  did not seem to catch on in Singapore. I have been wanting to try it to see why so many Chinese love it so much. A Kitchen does it in two ways,   Mala Crawfish 麻辣小龙虾   [S$38] or   Garlic Powder Crawfish   蒜蓉小龙虾 [S$38]. Since I can't really eat spicy f...
