Dong Bei Cai Guan 东北菜馆

Dong Bei Cai Guan - Restaurant Front

Dong Bei Cai Guan 东北菜馆 is probably the most under-the-radar restaurant I have ever been to. I was looking for Northeastern Chinese (dongbei) restaurants in Bukit Batok and this restaurant keep popping up. So I decided to give it a try.

Location

This restaurant is located inside Midview Building in Bukit Batok industrial park.

Midview Building is not near to any MRT station, the nearest bus stop only has bus 189. The best way to reach this place is by taxi or car.

Once you reach Midview Building, go to the main entrance and take the passenger lift to third floor. After exiting the lift, turn left and walk all the way straight and you will reach Dong Bei Cai Guan 东北菜馆.

Dong Bei Cai Guan - Indoor

The restaurant is very spacious with huge round wooden tables.   There is both indoor and outdoor seating and a huge television at the back blasting out Chinese songs.

The Food

Dong Bei Cai Guan - Homemade Skin Frozen

Homemade Skin Frozen 自制猪皮冻 [S$7] is a classic cold dish that I remember eating as a child. This is made by simmering pok skin for hours and freeze in the fridge. It is served in thick strips and flavoured with a minced garlic, soy sauce and black vinegar.

Dong Bei Cai Guan - Scallion Pancake

I like that the Scallion Pancakes 葱油饼 [S$5] are thin and crispy with detectable fragrance of scallions. They are not too oily and maintain the crispiness throughout our meal.

Dong Bei Cai Guan - Dry Pot Organic Cauliflower

The cauliflower in Dry Pot Organic Cauliflower 干锅有机菜花 [S$15] are tossed together with slices of carrots and onions. It is then served in a small metal pot with a small burner to keep it warm. The stir-frying brings out the natural sweetness of the cauliflower.

Dong Bei Cai Guan - Tinfoil Baked Potato Chips

Tinfoil Baked Potato Chips 锡纸土豆片[S$7] is a simple yet delicious dish that anyone can make at home. The oil from the meat sauce brings out the natural sweetness of the potatoes.

Dong Bei Cai Guan - Grilled Mutton

These Grilled Lamb Skewer 羊肉串 [S$1.20 per stick] and Grilled Beef Tendon [S$2 per stick] tastes exactly like the ones I had when I was little. Tender mutton cubes are interlaced with cubes of mutton fat and doused generously with chilli and cumin powder. The mutton fats melts during grilling which tenderises the mutton cubes.

Dong Bei Cai Guan - Chinese Sauerkraut Fish

This Chinese Sauerkraut Fish 酸菜鱼 [S$22] is so much better than the one I had at Yan Lai Ju 宴来居. The soup is thick with sauerkraut, chilli and spices while the fish slices are thick and firm.

Dong Bei Cai Guan - Candied Sweet Potatoes

Candied Sweet Potatoes 拔丝地瓜 [S$13] is a traditional Northeastern Chinese dish that children and adults all enjoy. You pull out a piece and dip it in the accompanying cold water. The sugar coating hardens and you can see the sugar strands which children love.

PAUL

PAUL is a renowned family French bakery and patisserie founded in 1889. Bringing with them them the fine tradition of passion for food and French traditions, PAUL gives Singaporeans a glimpse into French culture and tradition through the delicious and visually-appealing pastries and food.       PAUL's Hot Chocolate is not as creamy as I would have liked it but every last drop is made with good-quality cocoa powder.     Lemon Tart With Meringue is not exactly my favourite dessert, but it looked so pretty that I decided to give it a try anyway. However, it proved to be too sour for my palette even with the beautifully flamed meringue.    Croque Madame is croque-monsieur (grilled ham and cheese sandwich) topped with a fried egg. Emmental cheese, cream and ham is sandwich in pain de eie and toasted till a rich golden brown colour. Topped with a fried egg with runny yolk, every bite is filled with delicious goodness.   Address and telephone n...

O'ma Spoon

Korean bingsu is a popular Korean dessert comprising of ice shavings and various ingredients such as sweetened condensed milk, fruit syrups, fresh fruits, Korean rice cake and ice-cream. Bingsu is all the craze in Singapore now and Korean bingsu cafes are popping up everywhere like wild mushrooms.                            Besides bingsu, this dessert cafe also serves usual cafe offerings such as coffee and tea. I have been told that their Signature Oven-Baked Honey Bread is very good. The flavours include Strawberry & Chocolate with Ice Cream, Banana & Chocolate with Ice Cream and Green Tea with Ice Cream.     I was told that   Mango Cheesecake Bingsu   is one of the most popular item on the menu. Oh my, it is a sight to behold! A bowl of shaved ice is topped with sweetened condensed milk and freshly-cut m...

Grandma's - Authentic Singapore Food

Grandma's has been around for quite a while now but I only got the chance to try their food recently when the third outlet opened in Suntec City.        I remember having these prawn crackers when I was little. They are so easy and good to eat, I can finish a whole package of this in one sitting.     I don't usually order Malay food, but the Nasi Bukhari looked so good in the menu, I thought I will give it a try. Fragrant yellow turmeric rice is served with golden brown chicken leg which is crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. Prawns were fresh and succulent but I don't really like the sauce the prawns are cooked in. What really amazes me about this dish is the beef rendang.          I never knew Bo Bo Cha Cha is so such a delightful dessert until I tried it here at Grandma's. The warm and thick coconut tastes so good with chunks of sweet potato and yam. This is definitely comfort food that warms the heart.   Gr...
