Xi Men Jie - Wholesome Taiwanese Meals

I first noticed Xi Men Jie 西门街 in the basement of Westgate, and then again in Funan Mall. A search on Google reveals that Xi Men Jie is actually a chain restaurant with 8 outlets in different parts of Singapore. Let see how the food at Xi Men Jie compares with   WANt Food Taiwanese Delights. Menu The menu offers signature dishes, snacks, cold dishes, soups, wok specials, milk teas, assam black teas and flavored teas. The Food Braised Pork Rice 卤肉饭   is the most classic of Taiwanese cuisine. I find Xi Men Jie’s version a little salty and the pork a little too lean but otherwise still acceptable. Another classic Taiwanese food is   Oyster Mee Sua 蚵仔面线 . The three pieces of oysters on top of the mee sua are plump and juicy while the mee sua is thick and silky. Onion pancakes is a popular snack in Taiwan. Xi Men Jie offers a premium version with cheese and egg,   Cheese Onion Egg Pancake 芝士葱油蛋饼 . There is pork floss inside the egg onion pancake t00, which adds ano...

272 Homemade Pau Dim Sum

Little did I realize, there are actually quite a few dim sum places in Bukit Batok. I chose the one with the highest rating on Google reviews - 272 Homemade Pau Dim Sum. This is a hawker stall located in Block 272 Bukit Batok East Avenue 4, hence the name. The baos are definitely homemade, the huge bamboo steamers lying on the counters and irregularly-shaped baos are a dead giveaway. Even though there are only 14 items on the menu, you can’t beat prices which range from S$1 to S$4. My favorite is the   Century Egg Porridge   [S$2.70] which is silky-smooth with lots of century eggs. The baos are alright but the pork ribs are a little salty. The dim sums here go so well with the freshly-made soya milk and beancurd from Jian Bi Soya Milk and Roasted Meats a few shops away. 272 Homemade Pau Dim Sum Address: 272 Bukit Batok East Avenue 4, Singapore 650272 Opening Hours: Daily 4am - 2pm

Pietrasanta The Italian Restaurant

Hidden by a flight of stairs outside the entrance of Fusionpolis, Pietrasanta The Italian Restaurant is a hidden gem of Italian restaurant in One North. The warm and inviting ambiance reminds me of   iO Italian Osteria   in HillV2. Pietrasanta The Italian Restaurant specializes in cuisine from the Tuscany region of Italy. The Food The meal starts with a complimentary basket of bread, with olive oil and balsamic vinegar. There is a promotion of   Spritz Pizzolato Dolce Vita   at 2 glasses for S$15.90. The drinks looks pretty with warm orange hues but it contains bitter liqueur and tastes like cough syrup. I had a hard time finishing it. Appetizer You can’t go wrong with   Burrata   (daily special), a classic appetizer in Italian cuisine. The pairing of creamy mozzarella cheese with parma ham, tart tomatoes and rocket leaves makes this a great go-to appetizer at any Italian restaurant. Fried Whitebait   (daily special), fritto di paranza in Italian, mean...

New Udon Mookata

I have been wanting to try New Udon Mookata ever since it moved out from the en bloc Golden Mile Complex. New Udon Mookata has since moved to 119 Lavender Street. The nearest MRT station is Lavender and go to Exit B. Walk to the left and turn left when you see Aperia Mall. Walk for another 10 minutes and you will reach New Udon Mookata. The bright blue signboard with the words “New Udon Mookata” is unmistakable. This place does not accept reservations, it’s on first-come-first-serve basis. The turnover rate is pretty quick, so you shouldn’t have to wait for too long. A set for two costs S$45 which comes with a plate full of prawns, squid, marinated chicken and pork, pork liver, sliced sausages, crabmeat and fishballs. The vegetable platter contains two eggs, lots of leafy vegetables, enoki mushrooms and lots of vermicelli. Grease the grilling plate with the provided pork fat and we are ready to cook! The juice from the grill will flow into the soup surrounding the grill, making the sou...

Yan Palace Restaurant 燕阁大酒楼

I have heard so much about Yan Palace Restaurant. Every time there is talk about having dim sum, everyone will unanimously suggest Yan Palace Restaurant. If you are coming on Sunday morning, it’s a good idea to make a booking at 10am because the place becomes really busy by 11am. Decor The whole restaurant is carpeted with red and black with gold carpet, giving the restaurant a grandiose feel. The purple table cloth with white chair covers gives the ambience a touch of luxury. The grand Yan Palace Restaurant will make a good place to hold wedding dinners or dinner functions. Menu Here is Yan Palace Restaurant’s menu for your reference. What I Ate Small [S$5] The chicken feet in   桂林蒸风爪 Steamed Chicken Claws in Spicy Sauce   are steamed so well that the skin falls off the bones with just a suck. The sauce is only slightly spicy but nothing that a non-spicy eater cannot handle. I love a good custard bun anytime and I really enjoyed the   Steamed Custard and Egg Yolk ...
