Shanghai Tan Pan-Fried Bun - Authentic Shanghainese Cuisine

Shanghai Tan Pan-Fried Bun - Restaurant Front

Shanghai Tan Pan-Fried Bun has recently opened a new outlet in 321 Clementi. I have fond memories of the food so my colleagues and I decided to check out if the food is still as good.

Shanghai Tan Pan-Fried Bun - Menu

Shanghai Appetizers

Shanghai Tan Pan-Fried Bun - Braised Pork Rib with Special Home-made Sauce

Braised Pork Rib with Special Home-made Sauce 外婆家糖醋小排 [S$8.80] is finger-licking addictive. It has the perfect balance of sweet and sour, very appetizing.

Shanghai Tan Pan-Fried Bun - Stewed Bamboo Shoot in Oyster Sauce

Stewed Bamboo Shoot in Oyster Sauce 油焖笋 [S$6.80] is one of my favorite Shanghainese snacks. The seasoned bamboo is both sweet and salty, they go well with any noodles.

Shanghai Tan Pan-Fried Bun - Poached Hong Kong Kai Lan

Nothing beats the simple and refreshing Poached Hong Kong Kai Lan 白灼芥兰 [S$5.80] with goes well with any rice or noodles.

Shanghai Dim Sum

Shanghai Tan Pan-Fried Bun - Signature Popping Juice Pan-Fried Bun

Signature “Popping Juice” Pan-Fried Bun 爆汁生煎包 [S$5.80] is the must-try here. These buns are pan-fried so the base are a little browned but they are full of juice.

Shanghai Tan Pan-Fried Bun - Shanghai Steamed Pork Xiao Long Bao

Even though the Shanghai Steamed Pork “Xiao Long Bao” 上海小笼包 [S$5.80] are not as pretty as the ones from Din Tai Fung, they are still pretty good to eat. You can get these as part of members-only lunch set (ask the staff about it).

Shanghai Tan Pan-Fried Bun - Pan-Fried Pork Dumpling

These Pan-Fried Pork Dumpling 传统鲜肉锅贴 [S$5.80] are slightly browned from pan-frying which makes them even more delicious.

Shanghai Tan Pan-Fried Bun - Dee--Fried Glutinous Rice

I won’t recommend ordering Deep-Fried Glutinous Rice 黄金粢饭糕 [S$4.50 for 5 pieces]. It looks good but it’s really pieces of deep-fried rice stick which are totally bland.

Shanghai Stir-Fried Rice

Shanghai Tan Pan-Fried Bun - Fried Rice with Bacon, Shrimps and Eggs

You have been warned, the Fried Rice with Bacon, Shrimps and Egg 虾仁培根蛋炒饭 [S$9.80] portion is huge. The four of us had a hard time finishing one plate of this fried rice, even though it’s really fragrant.

Shanghai Soup

Shanghai Tan Pan-Fried Bun - Shanghai Spicy & Sour Soup

This Shanghai Spicy & Sour Soup 上海酸辣汤 [S$5.80] goes perfectly well with any of the fried rice. The portion is pretty big too, so beware when ordering.

Shanghai Noodles

Shanghai Tan Pan-Fried Bun - Noodle with Minced Pork in Bean Sauce

This Noodle with Minced Pork in Bean Sauce 酱香炸酱拌面 [S$7.80] has more meat sauce than noodles. The meat sauce is not too salty either, which makes this even more tasty.

Shanghai Desserts

Shanghai Tan Pan-Fried Bun - Glutinous Rice Balls in Sweet Fermented Rice Wine

I was really excited that they have Glutinous Rice Balls in Sweet Fermented Rice Wine QQ酒酿小圆子 [S$5.20] because not many places sell this. The rice wine is sweet and the glutinous rice balls are so chewy, it taste exactly the same as I remembered.

Shanghai Tan Pan-Fried Bun - Deep Fried Glutinous Rice Balls with Custard and Coated ith White Sesame

Deep Fried Glutinous Rice Ball with Custard and Coated with White Sesame 奶黄流沙小麻球 [S$5.20] is really disappointing. The custard inside is a ball, it’s not flowy at all.

Shanghai Tan Pan-Fried Bun - Crispy Pumpkin Pie

Crispy Pumpkin Pie 小宝贝南瓜饼 [S$5.20] is chewy and slightly crispy which proves to be a good combination. Children and adults will enjoy this.

PAUL

PAUL is a renowned family French bakery and patisserie founded in 1889. Bringing with them them the fine tradition of passion for food and French traditions, PAUL gives Singaporeans a glimpse into French culture and tradition through the delicious and visually-appealing pastries and food.       PAUL's Hot Chocolate is not as creamy as I would have liked it but every last drop is made with good-quality cocoa powder.     Lemon Tart With Meringue is not exactly my favourite dessert, but it looked so pretty that I decided to give it a try anyway. However, it proved to be too sour for my palette even with the beautifully flamed meringue.    Croque Madame is croque-monsieur (grilled ham and cheese sandwich) topped with a fried egg. Emmental cheese, cream and ham is sandwich in pain de eie and toasted till a rich golden brown colour. Topped with a fried egg with runny yolk, every bite is filled with delicious goodness.   Address and telephone n...

O'ma Spoon

Korean bingsu is a popular Korean dessert comprising of ice shavings and various ingredients such as sweetened condensed milk, fruit syrups, fresh fruits, Korean rice cake and ice-cream. Bingsu is all the craze in Singapore now and Korean bingsu cafes are popping up everywhere like wild mushrooms.                            Besides bingsu, this dessert cafe also serves usual cafe offerings such as coffee and tea. I have been told that their Signature Oven-Baked Honey Bread is very good. The flavours include Strawberry & Chocolate with Ice Cream, Banana & Chocolate with Ice Cream and Green Tea with Ice Cream.     I was told that   Mango Cheesecake Bingsu   is one of the most popular item on the menu. Oh my, it is a sight to behold! A bowl of shaved ice is topped with sweetened condensed milk and freshly-cut m...

Grandma's - Authentic Singapore Food

Grandma's has been around for quite a while now but I only got the chance to try their food recently when the third outlet opened in Suntec City.        I remember having these prawn crackers when I was little. They are so easy and good to eat, I can finish a whole package of this in one sitting.     I don't usually order Malay food, but the Nasi Bukhari looked so good in the menu, I thought I will give it a try. Fragrant yellow turmeric rice is served with golden brown chicken leg which is crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. Prawns were fresh and succulent but I don't really like the sauce the prawns are cooked in. What really amazes me about this dish is the beef rendang.          I never knew Bo Bo Cha Cha is so such a delightful dessert until I tried it here at Grandma's. The warm and thick coconut tastes so good with chunks of sweet potato and yam. This is definitely comfort food that warms the heart.   Gr...
