The English House

A friend told me about The English House. He said it’s one of the few places in Singapore where you can get authentic English food. Decor Located in one of the shophouses along Mohamed Sultan Road, The English House can be a little inconspicuous and hard to locate. Lookout for a shophouse with bright yellow walls and dark green doors. It may be easier to find the restaurant using the unit number. Inside, it’s more oriental than English with embossed Chinese calligraphy adorning the walls. There are many art pieces on the light-blue walls as well as a variety of statues and figurines around the huge dining room. Glass panels in the ceiling allow sunlight to enter, brightening up the dining room significantly. Food You can find all the classic English food on this menu, from pies to fish and chips to wellingtons and Sunday Roast. Nothing gets more classic than   Shepherd’s Pie   [S$25]. It comes in a small casserole dish. The pie is covered with thick cuts of potato to give the ...

Murugan Idli Shop - Authentic South Indian Vegetarian Restaurant

An Indian friend I have not seen for a long time asked to meet up. This Indian friend of mine follows a special diet called jain where they don’t eat root-vegetables. Except for   Nalan Restaurant , I’m not very well-versed with jain restaurants in Singapore so he suggested that we go to Murugan Idli Shop. Little did I expect to get a crash course on South Indian cuisine on top of a delicious meal. History Murugan Idli was founded by S. Manoharan in Chennai, India. Monaharan’s parents started a small coffee shop called Murugan Coffee Nilayam in Madurai. Manoharan’s mother began to make idli to support the family and the idlis became very popular. Even though there is only one Murugan Idli restaurant in Singapore, it is a chain of restaurants in Chennai with hundreds of shops. Murugan Idli only serves South Indian cuisine. I asked my friend how authentic he thinks the food is and he says it is 100% authentic. Murugan Idli is the best place to get authentic South Indian cuisine in Si...

Town Restaurant Buffet in The Fullerton Hotel

I was surprised when my friend invited me for lunch buffet at Town Restaurant in The Fullerton Hotel. I have never been to Town Restaurant in The Fullerton Hotel. The Fullerton Hotel is one of the most iconic hotels in Singapore, I expect the buffet to be perfect. Decor The restaurant looks very grand, with a big round buffet table lined with sweet treats at the entrance. There’s splashes of red everywhere, in celebration of Chinese New Year. Food The menu looks very impressive, offering a variety of international and local cuisines. There are not a lot of dishes at each station but everything was fresh and tasty. I especially liked the roasted meats from the Chinese Roast Cabinet. Roasted Chicken is a little dry but the Crackling Pork Belly and Pork Char Siu are spot-on. I’m not much of a salad person but the salad station impresses me with the different bases, supplements and dressings available. My favorite station at any buffet is always the dessert section, more so when it looks s...
