The English House

A friend told me about The English House. He said it’s one of the few places in Singapore where you can get authentic English food.

Decor

Located in one of the shophouses along Mohamed Sultan Road, The English House can be a little inconspicuous and hard to locate.

The English House - Restaurant Front

Lookout for a shophouse with bright yellow walls and dark green doors. It may be easier to find the restaurant using the unit number.

The English House - Door

Inside, it’s more oriental than English with embossed Chinese calligraphy adorning the walls. There are many art pieces on the light-blue walls as well as a variety of statues and figurines around the huge dining room. Glass panels in the ceiling allow sunlight to enter, brightening up the dining room significantly.

Food

The English House - Menu

You can find all the classic English food on this menu, from pies to fish and chips to wellingtons and Sunday Roast.

The English House - Shepherd's Pie

Nothing gets more classic than Shepherd’s Pie [S$25]. It comes in a small casserole dish. The pie is covered with thick cuts of potato to give the dish more texture. Inside, the minced meat is tender and moist which blends well with the mashed potatoes.

The English House - Beer Battered Atlantic Cod

Fish and chips is another English classic dish and I was told that Beer Battered Atlantic Cod [S$30] is the right fish for fish and chips. I don’t like the thick layer of batter but that’s what the accompanying mushy peas and tartar sauce are for. The serving is notoriously small with only one piece of fish and a tray of thick-cut fries.

The English House - Sunday Roast

I happened to be there on a Sunday and Sunday Roast was available. You can choose your meat:

  • Wagyu Fillet of Beef [S$80]
  • Wagyu Sirloin [S$88]
  • Wagyu Chateubriand [S$255]
  • Wagyu Delmonico [S$275]

Each Sunday Roast comes with yorkshire pudding and gravy, roasted potatoes, sautéed vegetables and bacon-wrapped sausages.

The wagyu sirloin was a little pricey but damn it was delicious.

The English House - The Box Tree Eton Mess

Ending the meal with The Box Tree Eton Mess [S$8], a traditional English dessert of meringue, whipped cream and berries. The traditional recipe calls for raspberry to balance out the heaviness of the meringue and whipped cream. The English House used strawberries instead of raspberries which is a little sweeter than I would have liked but still gets the job done.

The English House - Interior

Unfortunately, shortly after my visit, The English House announced temporary closure until further notice. If you are looking for English food, The Queen and Mangosteen in VivoCity is an alternative (although not as good, according to an English friend).

PAUL

PAUL is a renowned family French bakery and patisserie founded in 1889. Bringing with them them the fine tradition of passion for food and French traditions, PAUL gives Singaporeans a glimpse into French culture and tradition through the delicious and visually-appealing pastries and food.       PAUL's Hot Chocolate is not as creamy as I would have liked it but every last drop is made with good-quality cocoa powder.     Lemon Tart With Meringue is not exactly my favourite dessert, but it looked so pretty that I decided to give it a try anyway. However, it proved to be too sour for my palette even with the beautifully flamed meringue.    Croque Madame is croque-monsieur (grilled ham and cheese sandwich) topped with a fried egg. Emmental cheese, cream and ham is sandwich in pain de eie and toasted till a rich golden brown colour. Topped with a fried egg with runny yolk, every bite is filled with delicious goodness.   Address and telephone n...

Korean bingsu is a popular Korean dessert comprising of ice shavings and various ingredients such as sweetened condensed milk, fruit syrups, fresh fruits, Korean rice cake and ice-cream. Bingsu is all the craze in Singapore now and Korean bingsu cafes are popping up everywhere like wild mushrooms.                            Besides bingsu, this dessert cafe also serves usual cafe offerings such as coffee and tea. I have been told that their Signature Oven-Baked Honey Bread is very good. The flavours include Strawberry & Chocolate with Ice Cream, Banana & Chocolate with Ice Cream and Green Tea with Ice Cream.     I was told that   Mango Cheesecake Bingsu   is one of the most popular item on the menu. Oh my, it is a sight to behold! A bowl of shaved ice is topped with sweetened condensed milk and freshly-cut m...

Grandma's - Authentic Singapore Food

Grandma's has been around for quite a while now but I only got the chance to try their food recently when the third outlet opened in Suntec City.        I remember having these prawn crackers when I was little. They are so easy and good to eat, I can finish a whole package of this in one sitting.     I don't usually order Malay food, but the Nasi Bukhari looked so good in the menu, I thought I will give it a try. Fragrant yellow turmeric rice is served with golden brown chicken leg which is crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. Prawns were fresh and succulent but I don't really like the sauce the prawns are cooked in. What really amazes me about this dish is the beef rendang.          I never knew Bo Bo Cha Cha is so such a delightful dessert until I tried it here at Grandma's. The warm and thick coconut tastes so good with chunks of sweet potato and yam. This is definitely comfort food that warms the heart.   Gr...
