Peach Garden (Chinatown Point)’s Value-for-Money Set Menu

I recently had an excellent 6-course dinner at Peach Garden (Chinatown Point) for just S$38++ per person (minimum 2 person). It’s such a value-for-money deal so I want to share it with all my readers.  Due to Covid-19, all the dishes are served in individual portions with beautiful presentation.  The first dish is   Roasted Crispy Duck accompanied with Fried Prawn and Mongolian Sauce 脆皮烧鸭拼蒙古虾球 . I would never have thought to pair duck with prawn, but it works really well as an appetizer. The crunchy prawns are coated with a sweet and salty sauce. The 4 pieces of roasted duck comes with a smear of honey which takes away the gamey taste.  Next, we have   Chef’s Special Double-boiled Soup 滋补炖汤   which happens to be chicken soup on that day. The soup is aromatic and fragrant, nourishing your body as you drink it.  The third course is   Steamed Fillet of Pa Ting Fish with Minced Ginger in Superior Soya Sauce 姜茸蒸巴丁鱼扒 . The pa ting fish meat is te...

Tan Yu 探鱼 (Westgate) - Chongqing Grilled Fish

Tan Yu 探鱼 created quite a stir in Singapore when it opened its first outlet in 313@Somerset. Many Singaporeans queued for hours to get a taste of the famous Chongqing grilled fish. Now that Tan Yu has opened 2 new outlets in Westgate and Bugis Junction, I can finally try their baked fish without queuing for hours.  I don’t know about the other 2 outlets but I really like the interior design of the Westgate outlet. The floor is carpeted with red and blue Tan Yu logo design which makes the restaurant feel very cozy. The restaurant is decorated with vintage knick-knacks such as GUNDAM figurines and cassette tape players.  As the name suggests, Tan Yu is all about grilled fish. You not only get to choose the flavor of grilled fish, you also get to choose the type of fish.  There are 4 types of fish to choose from:  Limbo Fish 凌波鱼, Qingjiang Fish 清江鱼, Limbo Fish Fillet 凌波鱼柳 and Sea Bass Fish 金目鲈. Now it’s time to choose the flavor of the grill. The non-spicy option...

The Queen and Mangosteen - British Restaurant Pub in VivoCity

Guess what I found on a recent trip to VivoCity? A British restaurant-pub called The Queen and Mangosteen! I have been reminiscing the delicious food I had in London. Since I can’t travel now, finding a British restaurant in Singapore is as good as it gets.  There is a legend why this British restaurant is called The Queen and Mangosteen.  Queen Victoria offered a reward of 8 pounds sterling to anyone who could deliver to her the fresh mangosteen fruit. Although it is not substantiated by any known historical document, it may be why the mangosteen is known as "Queen of Fruit".  Although The Queen and Mangosteen describes itself as "Gourmet British Pub", it serves much more than just pub grub. In fact, it offers everything from all-day breakfast to pies and desserts. You can view the full menu   here . I finally get to try the   Yorkshire Pudding with Gravy   [S$6] that I didn’t get to try when I was in London. It is usually a part of traditional Sund...

Tasty Loong by Chef Pung (Orto Park) Chinese New Year Set Menu 2021

Multi-award celebrity Chef Peng founded Tasty Loong at Orto Park and Link Hotel in 2018 and 2019 to let Singaporeans enjoy his award-winning recipes. Tasty Loong at Orto Park is located right beside the large pond that used to be part of Bottle Tree Park. I love the peaceful and serene ambience of this restaurant.  I recently had dinner with a group of friends at Tasty Loong (Orto Park). We were there during the Chinese New Year period so we got to try the New Year set menu. We chose Set B (for 8 persons) which costs S$468++ per table. Chinese New Year sets always starts with yu sheng (we call it   lo hei   in Singapore). It is made up of shredded vegetables, slices of raw fish and a variety of condiments with different auspicious meanings. You have to mix and toss the ingredients as high and as loudly as possible to signify prosperity.  Tasty Loong’s yu sheng is named   Salmon Fish Prosperity “Lo Hei” 迎春团圆齐捞起 (三文鱼生) .  Next on the menu is almost always sha...
