Yan Lai Ju 宴来居 - Another Northeastern Chinese Restaurant in Vision Exchange

I was strolling around Vision Exchange after having dinner at   A Kitchen   when I discovered another Northeastern Chinese restaurant by the name of Yan Lai Ju 宴来居. While there is always a long queue at A Kitchen, there are only a few diners at Yan Lai Ju 宴来居. A Kitchen’s strategic location right in front of the entrance might have played a part, but is that all to it? I decided to try out Yan Lai Ju 宴来居 for myself to find out. Yan Lai Ju - The Food Chinese barbecue or skewers is only available after 5pm. There’s supposedly an option to choose between Local Flavor 本地口味 and Heavy Flavor 东北口味. But I overheard a lady from another table that it tastes the same no matter which flavor you choose. I order   Grilled Mutton BBQ   羊肉串   [S$1.50 per stick, minimum 2 sticks] at every Northeastern Chinese restaurant because I just can’t get enough of it. The mutton skewers here are a little tough and much too spicy even though I ordered “small spicy”. Orleans Chicken ...

Straits Kitchen - Halal Southeast Asian Buffet

Unlike   Greenhouse   which serves international buffet, the Straits Kitchen specializes in Southeast Asian cuisine. You will find all your favorite Singapore dishes, all in one place. The Straits Kitchen is halal-certified, which explains why it is so popular with Muslim families and companies with Muslim staff. Straits Kitchen Buffet Prices Lunch Buffet: Adult S$62++, Child S$32++ Dinner Buffet: Adult S$72++, Child S$42++ Straits Kitchen - The Food You can find the full lunch/dinner buffet   here   while I give you a virtual guide below. I only Popiah and Chill Tiger Prawn at the appetiser section. The chef at the live   Popiah   station makes a pretty good popiah. Besides the Popiah station is a huge tray of ice with a single miserable basket of   Chilled Tiger Prawns . At the Malay station, I had  Nasi Puteh   (Steamed Organic Jasmine Rice) with   Ayam Buah Keluak   (Chicken in lack Nut Gravy) and   Rendang Daging ...

Singapore Crawfish Ramen - First and Only in Singapore

I was in the Downtown area one day and I was feeling hungry so I turned to Burpple for restaurant recommendations. Among all the food places listed on Burpple, Singapore Crawfish Ramen caught my attention. A little search online reveals that this ramen stall is opened by “Ah Girls Go Army” actress Debra Loi. Not only is Debra an F&B stall owner, she is also a nurse, an actress and Miss Universe Singapore finalist. Crawfish ramen seems similar to   Ramen Keisuke Lobster King, let’s go and find out if it’s any good. The Ramen Singapore Crawfish Ramen is located right at the end of Shenton Food Hall. I ordered the   Crawfish Ramen   [S$11.90] which comes with crawfish, seaweed, Naruto fishcake, bamboo shoots and ramen noodles imported directly from Japan. The broth is made by boiling 30 ingredients including crawfish heads over 16 hours. The broth has a rich umami sweetness that makes you just want to keep drinking. I like that the noodles are firm yet springy which goes...

Fong Sheng Hao (Westgate) - Taiwanese Toast Cafe

Fong Sheng Hao started off as a humble stall along Shilin MRT station in Taipei in 2013. Their charcoal toasts and milk tea became an instant hit and it was voted as one of the "Top Ten Breakfast in Taiwan". I was overjoyed when Fong Sheng Hao finally opened an outlet in Westgate because PLQ Mall and NEX are too far for me. Alas, the Westgate outlet was too popular with long queues outside the restaurant every day. This is partially a testament to the popularity of the restaurant and partially because the restaurant has only a seating capacity of 20. A few days ago, I finally managed to visit on a day with slightly less people and managed to get a seat. Let’s see what’s so great about this Taiwanese toast cafe. If you don’t have the time to visit in person, you can also order online   here . Fong Sheng Hao - The Food The cold refreshing   Cane Flavored Black Tea   [S3.20] is slightly sweetened with sugar cane and served with two pieces of crunchy sugar-coated ...

Jia Zhi Wei 家之味 - Northeastern Chinese Restaurant in East

I realised that all the Northeastern Chinese restaurant that I have been to are all located in central and west parts of Singapore. So I especially searched on Google for a Northeastern restaurant in the East and one in Bedok called Jia Zhi Wei 家之味. Jia Zhi Wei 家之味 is hidden in a shophouse below a Bedok HDB flat. It is very convenient for folks living in the area, but a little hard to find for people who don't live there Jia Zhi Wei 家之味's menu features the usual barbecue foods, Northeastern Chinese-style stir-fried dishes and noodles. If you can't read Chinese, just order by pointing to the pictures in the menu for the English translations of the dishes are unintelligible. You will understand what I mean in a bit. Jia Zhi Wei - The Food The Three Fresh 地三鲜   [S$8] is a classic Northeastern Chinese dish that is made with three common ingredients - potato, eggplant/brinjal and bell pepper. As with most Northeastern Chinese food, it tends to be a little oily but it's a gre...

Jia Wei - Chinese Restaurant in East Singapore

I have always believed that all the good restaurants such as   Ban Heng   are in town area but a recent visit to Jia Wei proved me wrong. Jia Wei is located on level two of Hotel Grand Mecure Roxy, an old hotel in the Marina Bay area. Despite being a reputable Chinese restaurant with years of experience, the interior of Jia Wei is modern and classy. White ceilings and walls match the cream-colored tables while the white and black rattan chairs gives the place a relaxed feel. Jia Wei - The Food Jia Wei is pretty famous for their innovative spin on classic dim sums which are only available during lunch. We had  Traditional Pork Siew Mai 传统鲜虾烧卖   [S$7.80 for 3 pieces],   Jia Wei Butterfly Pea Har Gow 嘉味蓝蝶花虾饺   [S$7.80 for 3 pieces],   Prawn Dumpling with Black Vinegar and Chilli Oil 四川麻辣红油抄手   [S$7.80 for 5 pieces],  Australian Scallop Pea Flower Rice Roll 招牌蓝蝶花鲜带子粉肠   [S$8.80],   Blue Volcano Custard Bun 嘉味爆浆流沙包   [S$...

Cali at Ascott Raffles Place - 10 Year Anniversary with No-Inflation Menu

I had the pleasure of being invited to attend a food tasting at Cali at Ascott Raffles Place in celebration of their 10 year anniversary. Cali at Ascott Raffles Place has two levels. There is a well-stocked bar on the ground floor where you can get drinks and the upper level is the restaurant where you can seat down to enjoy your meal. Cali has been wowing Singaporeans with their delicious Southwestern fare for the past 10 years and they have especially curated a   No-Inflation Menu   which features dishes from their very first menu with no increase in prices. Cali - The Food There was only one soup available,   Wild Mushroom Soup   [S$8.90] which was made by blending shimeiji, white and shiitake mushrooms. It's really a drizzle of truffle oil, I couldn't taste the truffle after the first mouthful. The accompanying garlic bread is delightfully soft and buttery which went remarkably well with the soup. For starters, we ordered   Santa fe Crab Cake   [...
